It’s been a long 9 months since SPB graced us with an upgrade to one of the top selling programs of 2007, SPB Mobile Shell 1.5 (see review here) a program that Dieter and I consider to be a “must have”, especially for new WM users. In fact I was just wondering a few weeks ago what SPB were up to and whether we’d ever get a version 1.6.

Well, luckily here at WMExperts we got in our email a sparkling new version 2.0 in our mailboxes and let it be known, SPB has been hard at work with some new and interesting refinements to Mobile Shell 2 ($29.95; 50% for upgrades; Free if 1.x was purchased within 90 days). How does it match up with the popular 1.5—is the sequel a let down or smash?

Click the link to read my in-depth review with screen shots (240x240 & landscape) and even a full video (kudos to Dieter) of all the fancy new features, tweaks and surprises!

    Still not for WM Standard???
  3. #3
Sadly, no, still not for WM standard. There's nothing even in the same genre for WM Standard -- Facade is way too busy for me.

Which is really disappointing to me because I generally *prefer* standard to Pro these days.

I really, really like it. The only thing that's got me from buying it is one thing... I like to use my Treo one-handed, which includes using the red phone/end button to invoke the keyguard/turn off the screen. With Mobile Shell, it brings me back to the Today screen, then a second press to turn off the screen. I wish that they had included a way to bypass the Today screen part, and allow me to just turn off the screen (I really don't like using option/phone). If there's another program/hack that I can add to the Treo that will allow me to bypass that little annoyance, I'd buy Mobile Shell in a heartbeat. I would love to have Mobile Shell and never look at the Today screen again.

    LFD153, Dieter,

PointUI works very well on Standard. I use it on my Q and recommend it as an alternative to, well, nothing really...lol

    phrogpilot73,

Odd. On my 700wx, the Red key just powers off the device, one shot. My Green key minimizes any screens, but I have to only hit the key one time.

Whoa! I didn't know pointui worked on standard!

    Where's my Q9? Grumble grumble.

Yup. I've been doing some digging and it may be unique to the 750. No matter what screen I'm in, the first push takes you to Today, the seond push turns off the screen. I've been digging all around here and xda developers to try and find a work around, no joy thusfar. My coding skills aren't up to snuff to hack it myself.

    phrogpilot73,

I would think a relatively easy solution would be to download and try out AE Button Plus and remap your Red Key to whatever u want.

AEB+ is one of my favorite apps on the Treo as it makes it even more 1 hand friendly and more powerful--give it a shot.

Sounds intriguing... However, I must be an idjit - because I can't figure out how to get AE Button Plus to work. I start it, select the red phone button, select "Handle by AEBPlus", "Single Press" and "Power Off Your Device". Save and exit, and it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong...I don't think there's anyway to change the behavior on the 750 which is disappointing..thanks Vodafone for requring Palm to make it like that!

Well, I remapped the side button to do what I want. Now I just have to remember to use the side button vice the red phone button.

I installed it then removed it. I did not find it of need. I do however use Pocket Plus.

    phrogpilot73 -

Ah, yes: that's a known "feature" of the 750, designed for a european mentality because all euro phones do that with the red button (thank Nokia for that). Palm didn't want to do it, really, but got railroaded into it.

Only way to directly turn the screen off is to hit Opt + End. That mimics the standard "off" functionality of the 700wx end button.

That's what I figured. I was doing some digging to figure out why I couldn't do what I wanted to do. I'm guessing it's hard coded since AEBPlus can't do anything about it either. Oh well. Next question - I thought I saw on the video on spb software's website them finger scrolling through contacts. Is that an additional piece of software I have to buy, or am I somehow missing the setting?

Edit - yes, again I'm an idjit. I was confusing the video I watched of Mobile Shell with Pocket Plus. Disregard.

Somewhere in the Treo hacks thread there is 2 hacks.

    01. That enables the side button to be remapped.

    02. Small suspend program that mimics the alt-power button.

This allows for a one button push to suspend.

Search for it and you will be pleased.

    Dieter, Malatesta

I installed PointUI the minute it was available for Standard, (my old Q). But I just could not suffer through some of its "bugginess." I'd have to re-install to remember what the problems were, but it just did not work the way it was supposed to. I kind of made me sad, the UI is very pretty. Dieter, if you put it on your Q9, let me know how it works if you could.

Currently I have the good old HTC Home Customizer - Home screen on my Mogul. I have a terrible time with memory consumption on the phone...I currently only have 4.02 MB free! I also run several other apps...namely Good Link (which should be called BAD Link) and a couple others that seem to be memory hogs. So question is...if I buy and install SPB's program instead of the HTC Home program am I going to see any gains in memory? Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

Install the trial first and see for yourself. I have no idea.

This app looks fantastic. Are the screen shots on a 240x240 screen? I'm almost sold on the 750 but I'm a little hung up on the resolution. If this app makes things look as sharp as these pics, that'd probably put me over the top. The font hack you guys put up last week and now this are making it easier to jump to WM.

How about a good StyleTap review
