I upgraded to WM6 last year using the unofficial version on this site. Now that the official version is out is there any reason to upgrade (reinstall) the version?

    Thanks

I am running the unofficial version. No problems. Prefer not to have the extra AT&T icons and crapware.

If you're talking about the unofficial "leaked ATT rom" that hit the net last fall, then I would upgrade.

The leaked ROM definitely wasn't ready, as I found out when my area got upgraded to 3G around Thanksgiving. It was killing my battery so bad that I had to force it back in GPRS mode to make it through the day. After loading an Official release in December, my battery lasted as long on 3G as it had been lasting under GPRS with the leaked rom.

However, if you're going to do the upgrade, I would go with Palm's official Unbranded ROM. It's not loaded with all the bloatware and restrictions in the ATT rom.

    - No locks on Internet Sharing
    - Full Windows Live
    - No ATT bloatware

Trueluck3 took the Palm installer and hacked it so it would load the Unbranded ROM on a branded device. The ROM was not modified.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you details and download links.

If you've already loaded Trueluck3's unbranded rom, stick with it. As shown above, it has advantages over the official and leaked ATT releases.

Yes. Go to Settings>System>About>Phone and look at your software version. Cingular ends in CNG and AT&T ends in ATT.

I'll PM you the unbranded info.

Oops, just realized what you were asking. If you loaded the leaked ROM, you had to have done it via the SD card method which does not update the version info in the about screen. So, it probably still shows your original version like 1.13 or something.

So let's say that I decide to go with the unbranded ROM... Will it work on a locked 750? If I run my backup from Sprite, will it work afterwards? I'm also curious, what are the restrictions on Internet Sharing?

I upgraded last august using the SD card. The about screen as you suggested was not updated.

Was there an unofficial release between then and the current official release that is better to use.

    Thanks

The unbranded ROM will work on a locked 750. I use it now. You will have to change the payloads.xml file to make it work. Otherwisw it will abort the upgrade. Simple process. Search is your friend.
I would not restore from Sprite, only because I think it's better to do a clean install. Each carrier has its own registry tweaks. You'll be carrying some of those forward if you restore.

Do not do a backup restore following a major OS update! Reload everything and make a new backup.

Note: Make sure your backup util is WM6 compatible. The version that came on my Palm disc was for WM5 (which is what my device shipped with).

As for restrictions on internet sharing, the unbranded rom has none. All it needs is the ability to reach the internet and you can share regardless of what kind of data plan you purchase.

The ATT rom should have the ability to lock down sharing unless you are on an AT&T Tethered Data Plan. At this time it seems that those still on their original unlimited plan can use tethering. No clue when ATT will enforce it.

Since I'm on the unlimited data + tethering plan (forget what they call it), it seems as though the only thing I would gain from switching to the unbranded would be lack of AT&T crap (I don't use Windows Live). This is provided that they don't change the rules about my data plan in the future... Is my assumption correct?

Since I just got my 750, it came preloaded with WM6. Luckily Sprite backup that's included on the CD is compatible. I'm thankful for the small things...

You are correct. However, you mentioned that you have a tether data plan. You could load the unbranded and save yourself $30 a month on the data plan.

Old pricing = $40 unlimited data
New pricing = $35 standard unlimited data / $65 data tether plan - 5GB cap

If you only tether occasionally, and don't use massive amounts of data when you do, why would you want to pay the extra $30 a month for the tether plan?

(NOTE: If your data usage is HIGH on the standard plan, they will flag it. Keep it reasonable and you should be fine.)

I think I'm still under the old plan. I have "PDA Personal Unlimited w/1500 messages" which is $40/month. The only options I have to sign up for are MediaMax, MediaNet, Smartphone Connect, and PDA Personal. Don't see a separate tether option. Of course, I only tether 1-2 times per month so it's not a huge issue...

If the phone I got came preloaded with the WM6 ROM, can I use the ActiveSync method of loading the unbranded, or am I limited to the SD card method?

The activesync method uses palm installers. It will probably see your software version and tell you that you don't need an update. The SD card should work regardless.

Hi. I've been reading the discussion. I got a 750 last December, ATT branded/locked, with WM5. I'm with T-mobile so I unlocked it. I installed the ATT version of WM6 Treo 750 updater 2.25 from palm.com. Link below.

    http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...pdate/att.html

Question - what is the ATT crap that people are talking about? Can I load the unbranded verion of WM6 on my phone? What will I gain by doing so?

In palm.com, I don't see any unbranded version of WM6 that you can download. Only ATT or Rogers.

I don't have no problems with the phone and I don't use email, but I do use the internet on it. Maybe I should just leave it alone.

Thanks in advance for any answers/advice/comments.

Haven't you seen all the apps that you can't use? There's a whole bunch of shortcuts to ATT pay per use services.

If you want to load the unbranded version PM me and I'll send you links.

Yes, I see those. Can't those shortcusts be deleted? I read in other posts that apps run faster in the unbranded version. Is this true?

Thanks for your offer to help. I can see from other posts that you have a lot of knowledge and experience with the 750. I need to find a better reason why I should switch. I'll pm you if I decide to switch.

Since you're not on ATT, then the tether lockdown should never be an issue for you. If you're a Windows Live user, then you may want it.

I PM'd you the info in case you decide to go that way.
