the word on the street is that AT&T will be monitoring the use of unlimited internet plans. yeah unlimited...anyone who goes over 5gb will be flagged...hey i thought unlimited means unlimited...ohh well this comes from a very reliable source within the administration...just a heads up...

    Dirty bastids!

AT&T has 2 unlimited plan types: standard Unlimited and an Unlimited Tether plan

So, do you know if they are monitoring both data plans for heavy users, or are they just looking at the standard plans to see if someone is tethering without paying for a tether plan?

Oh yeah, for those not "in the know", you can tether without paying the extra $20 a month for a tether plan if you are running the Unbranded WM6 ROM.

It's only the AT&T WM6 ROM that checks the data plan before allowing tethering.

fastlerner, they are going to monitor the unlimited data plans for peeps that dont have the tethering plan...i guess they say that 5gb is a lot of data to transfer over a phone or pda...so you gotta be tethering...i really dont know how they are going to make you pay or prove that you are tethering...

    what is "tethering"?
  6. #6
Tethering is basically using your phone as a modem and hooking it up to your laptop so you can get on the internet with your laptop. This was actually discussed a few months ago. A friend of mine works for AT&T and I asked him about this. He basically said if you use it sparingly you will be fine but if you do it every day and download or upload a ton of stuff your account could be flagged. To be honest 5GB is a lot of data in one month.

    Thanks, Wookie. :-)

I have an unlimited data plan with AT&T, but not with "tethering" option, I don't think.

I use PDA Net to use my phone as a modem with my laptop.
I also have a TomTom One XL that connects to my phone via Bluetooth DUN to check traffic. (I installed the hack that turns on BT DUN on WM6 to do this.)

I used to do both of those with my Palm OS Treo 650, too, and AT&T never complained. I guess we'll see what happens this year....

Interesting way to get out of your contract if you want to

I only tether occasionally, like when I'm not at home and have to VPN into work for a support issue. Nowhere near 5GB a month.

I see folks talking about PDAnet from time to time. Probably pretty usefull when it was WM5 with DUN. But now that we have WM6 with Internet Sharing built in, does it really provide anything more?

I guess for ATT folks it would let them tether without needing the tether data plan, but the unbranded ROM will do too for free.

    Just curious.

fastlerner - I don't know. I'm new to WM - was a Palm OS user for years.

PDA Net on the Palm OS (Treo 650) connected via GPRS. Does the same thing on my WM6 device (Treo 750).

What is this "Internet Sharing" of which you speak?

And speaking of stupid questions, I've been looking for a manual for WM6, but can't find one -- is there one out there? How do newbies like me find out what all this stuff is & how to use it??
  11. #11
If your device came with WM6 preloaded, the manual will be on the CD that came with the phone. Or you can download it here:

    http://palmone.r3h.net/downloads.pal...o750att_UG.pdf

With WM6, Microsoft removed DUN and simplified data connectivity with Internet Connection Sharing. In the mobile version, they shortened the name to Internet Sharing.

To use it, you just open the Internet Sharing application on your Treo, plug in your USB cable and click "connect". Your windows PC will then recognize your Treo as a network device. That's it, you're surfing the internet.

You can also configure it to connect via BT. Set up Internet Sharing for BT and on your PC, join a BT PAN (Personal Area Network).

Personally I prefer USB as it keeps the device charged while you browse. Mac users lack the drivers and so have to use via BT.

Thanks, fastlerner -- my device came with WM5 & I installed WM6, so no manual. I will read the one you posted - THANK YOU!.

Keep in mind, if you loaded the official ATT WM6 release, and you decide to tether with Internet Sharing, you'll HAVE to be on a tether data plan.

You can get around that by loading the UNbranded WM6 rom.

OK, got it. I did load the official release. I think I'll keep using PDA Net. :-)
  15. #15
When does it go into effect?

I have an official ATT WM6 release loaded, and I tether with internet sharing all the time.. way more than 5Gigs/month with no problems.

    I guess time will tell.

If you have the official AT&T WM6 release, it won't tether without a tether data plan. Therefore, you're probably already paying extra $$ for an unlimited tether data plan.

They shouldn't be looking for you. According to Rino808, they are looking for people on the standard unlimited data plan with high usage which would indicate tethering. They want us to pay the extra $20 a month.

So I'm trying to make sense of this for me...

I started as a Cingular customer, and when I signed up there was only one Unlimited plan -- no "tether" version. I've never changed my plan.

I loaded the official ATT WM6 release, and have not hacked anything to make ICS work -- but it does. No problem.

So, was I migrated to the more expensive "tether" plan when ATT took over? I'm paying $40/mo for unlimited data, on top of my voice plan charges.

Anyone have a clue about this?

Me, too! (Actually, I started out as an AT&T Wireless customer back in 2001, then got migrated to Cingular, then to the new AT&T Wireless.)

I'm wondering the same thing myself.....

I just went to my account page at attwireless.com & it says I've got "PDACnctUntlAdd" (whatever the heck that means), for which I pay $39.99/month.

I do know that that's what it's always said, even when I was with Cingular.

Is that the "tethered" plan or not?
  19. #19
Nope, $40 a month is the standard unlimited plan. I've been working under the impression that the ATT WM6 rom would check the data plan before allowing ICS to connect.

Maybe ATT isn't enforcing it yet?

If you check the website, you'll see that they now list tether data plans at $15-$20 more per month.

What are they calling these tethered plans? In my AT&T account, I have the options of the following data products:

    Data

    -Media Bundles
    --MEdia Max Unlimited - $39.99
    --MEdia Max 200 Bundle - $19.99
    --MEdia Works 1500 Bundle - $14.99

    -Media Net
    --MEdia Net 1 mb - $4.99

    -Smart Phone Connect
    --Smartphone Connect Unlimited - $19.99
    --Smartphone Connect 5MB - $9.99

    -Video Share Calling
    --Video Share Plus - $9.99
    --Video Share Starter - $4.99
--Video Share Pay Per Use - $0.00

    -International Data Features
--International Long Distance Text Message - $9.99

    -MISCELLANEOUS FEATURES
    --AT&T Mobile Backup - $1.99
    --Calling Name Block - $0.00
--PDA Personal Max Unl + Unl Messages - $49.99
--Enhanced Voice Mail with Numeric Paging - $1.99
FWIW, I don't even see the one that I'm actually using -- it's listed at the very bottom of the page with the rest of the things I actually have on my account. Perhaps I'm using a legacy product.

Regardless, there's nothing here that specifically says it's a tethered plan.
