I have gone a couple of weeks without ActiveSync on my laptop because it was messing me up so bad, I had to uninstall it. All the while, I have been updating only the phone, never the Outlook on my laptop. Now, I want to finally reinstall AS and synch the phone with my laptop.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I am going to avoid problems such as the laptop totally ignoring the changes - and new items - I have added to the phone? And, related to that, is there an older version of AS that I should be using, instead of ver 4 (or whatever the most recent version is that I had previously on the laptop), that would give me maximum flexibility in deciding which items should override which other items?

    Please send help!

You can try thsi to see if it helps you in resolving conflicts with Treo and Outlook:

    1. On "Treo" using ActiveSync window go to Tools/Options/Settings "If there is a conflict" select "Replace the item on my Device". Treo should not be connect to USB to use this feature.
    2. On "Desktop" using ActiveSync window go to Tools/Options/Settings select "Replace item on Device"
    3. ActiveSync 4.5 @ www.microsoft.com

Thx but that's just the situation I was trying to avoid, having all the changes I've made to the Treo phone be overridden by the desktop (laptop) data that hasn't been changed in a month or so. I've been making all changes and creating new tasks and appointments on the Treo while not making any changes to the Outlook data on my laptop for this past month or so.

In that setting, does anyone have an opinion as to which version of AS I should use, and how to set the settings so as not to lose all my changes made to the Treo?

All I can really suggest is to backup all your important data before you do this. So if it does override important data, it's not lost. i.e. specifically contacts and calendar info (At least that's what it was for me).

On your phone open activesync and then highlight Windows PC and click options. Select keep item on device. This will not only keep the item but sync it to your desktop. I use this all the time because I use multiple computers. So technically if I were to go to a PC after I'd made a change I wont loose that change and the PC will reflect the change in it's sync file. If by chance you had a file on the PC that had a duplicate name but different contents it would rename the file being added to you phone.

One last thing.... I know for sure even with the setting in the overwrite mode I'm able to sync and it will rewrite the pc file. Only time a conflict will happen is when you have a duplicate file. Duplicate contacts get added to the phone with no overwrite or remane. You'll end up with 2 contacts with the same name. So your only worry will be notes and such with duplicate names.
