I've just noticed the 500v is on sale for UKú299 (US$600) inc. tax on Palm UK. I'm fairly sure all 500v's are unlocked. The site just says "The Treo 500v smartphone is intended for use on the Vodafone network".

Is this something new, or did I just miss it?

hmm... Well the 500v just had some vodafone branding, like network setup.. unlike an unlocked GSM which does not have a branding. In Singapore, I bought the 500v but am using another ISP without any issues at all.

ú299 makes it way more expensive than any other UK SIM free "WM Standard" smartphone:-

I thought the "free on all contracts" 500v was supposed to be pitched at the low end "yoof" market?
    Another cockup by Palm then.

Anything from the European Palm store is always hideously overpriced! If you want a Treo 500v there are lots on eBay UK for about ú150 ($300)

What I found interesting is that it is being sold without a contract, but still with Vodafone branding. I hope that Palm will make it available in the US soon, as it's a great phone. With the Centro and 680 covering the Palm market and the 500v and 750 in the WM market, Palm would have a nice product line.
