New version, 2.0.0.11, is out in beta and it claims to be able to use cell tower triangulation to find where you are (meaning - no GPS needed). But - in my limited tests so far, it's not finding me on my VZ 700wx.

Grab the newest version, someone, and tell us if the 'My Location' works for you without GPS.

Go here to see the video and learn more:

    Really want this to work...

I'm getting "your current location is temporarily unavailable"

They made the + - Return buttons much smaller. Way less thumb friendly now.

yeah I'm getting the temporarily unavailable message, instantly. Verizon 700wx.

Same here (VZW 700WX as well) I am going to post in the Google forum and see what they say. The word 'Temporary' at least gives hope!!! I think that would be very cool, GPS functionability without GPS!!!!

P.S. Now what didn't I think of that??? LOL

I can't even install the 2.0 version to my Treo 700p. Every time I try to reinstall it I still get the 1.2.0.9 version. I only tried the download direct to my phone from their website, since I'm not near my PC with hotsync. Maybe it's a bad link?

Oops, I didn't see that this is the 700w/wx board, but I haven't seen any other posts on this either.

Zoom in is #3 on your keyboard and zoom out is #1.

But even so, I don't like what they did with the key functions. I loved how I could cycle through the results using the numbers on my keypad. Now they've taken that feature away and switched it to the space bar to cycle through results. Before I loved how zoom in was the letter I and zoom out was the letter O. Oh well..I might revert back to the previous version as location based service isn't working on my Sprint 700wx either. I do like how they fixed the lag there was when the program first opened.

No go here either on Sprint 700wx.

The download did install the new version though, but My Location doesn't work.

This will be a really nice feature when it works though. I don't always have my BT GPS puck with me, so this would be nice to have as an alternative.

"At this time, My Location (beta) is available for these devices:

    BlackBerry devices
    Some recent Motorola devices
    Some recent Sony Ericsson devices
    Many Windows Mobile devices
Nokia Series 60 3rd Edition devices

If you have a Java-enabled (J2ME) device, BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device, you can easily check whether or not My Location (beta) is available. Just to go "Help" > "About" from the application. If the box contains "myl: N/A," it means your device isn't reporting a cell. "

Found this posted over in PPCGeeks....explains a lot. I guess our devices will be 'activated' as they test, so it is a waiting game!!!! Oh well...it should be worth it, and the other tweaks makes it worth upgrading anyway!!

If you watch the YouTube video, the dude says that if it displays unavailable, move elsewhere and try it. Plus it's still in beta. More good things to come i gather. Nice.

    Sprint Treo 700wx

not working, i.e. location temporarily unavailable.

I work almost next door to Google HQ, so I doubt the problem is my location (I'm assuming that goog engineers would make sure it works in their own backyard first!)

I guess the Treo just doesn't have this functionality of reporting which cell tower to the software.

They probably just haven't enabled it on the 700wx yet, I'm sure it has that capability.

I will try it on my MotoQ tonight when I get home.

Well...their statement did mention some recent Motorola devices, and I don't think it gets much more recent than the Q, so you stand a good chance...let us know, I am sure there are a LOT of people interested in how this works (for when they finally get around to activating devices not listed previously)!!!

Although Gmaps is showing a location, rather than N/A under Help -> About -> myl:, I'm still getting 'Your current location is temporarily unavailable'. Only a matter of time til it's active.

I have the original Q, not the new Q that just came out, so its a little old, but I'll know in a couple hours.

    Yeah, I'll try mine tonight.

New Q has GPS built in and Gmaps in ROM anyways

Seems like 2008 is the year of LBS/GPS/aGPS, eh? This is getting good...

What phone do you have? I have the 700WX, and mine said N/A, but my data was off (at work now), so in a little bit I will turn it back on and see if it changes with the data connected, maybe I checked too soon.

Like Malatesta said....this is getting good!!!!
