one of the huge pro's of having my blackberry pearl was that i didn't have to pay for a monthly SMS package. Since i had a Data plan only, i was able to use Jivetalks' IMing program which allows you to set up your MSN, YAHOO, AOL, ICQ, etc iming accounts and use Instant Messenging which would use your Data and not SMS.

does the Treo 650 WM5 have any sort of 3rd party program that uses data for IMing?

    From the IM+ FAQ:

IM+ has nothing to do with SMS service. IM+ is using your GPRS connection only and you have to pay for amount of information you are sending and receiving.

It does support MSN, but I can't remember if you need a google account to sign on with first. Check out the thread below started by the Octro Wizard Malatesta for more info on Octro.
