WM6 was released today, is there anyway to upgrade the 700wx to it?

I highly doubt it unless Sprint makes it available.

    We can only hope!

I would be happy if someone could hack the 320x320 resolution out of it for WM5.

?? What good would that do? Is not the hardware at 240x240?

I'm not really sure. I thought the 240x240 was a limitation of WM5.

Since the 700p can do 320x320 I thought it might be possible...unless they used a different screen in the two phones.

I assumed different hardware - but I'd love to be wrong and have 320x320 be possible.

Here is the upgrade plan to window mobiel 6:

    1.) Open wallet
    2.) Give Palm $600
    3.) Get Treo 800

    That is my expectation.

freakin' ridiculous, I just read that too! I can't wait to see that...lets just hope Palm doesn't make us by a new device for it.

re: hardware, I'm not really sure. The whole thing with Palm and the 700w/700p thing was to make them as identical as possible to reduce production costs, in turn the 700p now uses the 700w's memory and that has caused issues with the p. Guess we'll find out eventually.

If I were a palm shareholder, I would kick the CEO in the *** if he ported wm6 to a treo 700wx!

I hope palm is working on a new treo that is a lot better than what we have now... maybe a little thinner, but with better battery life... yea, I'm dreaming.... Heck, if they "went all out" with something "great" I'd be happy...

I am holding off any moves until a WM6 device hits the Sprint shelves. Ben

No way in hell you'll get a legal upgrade.

That said there is no reason to buy a WM5 phone at this point IMO.

sadly, an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 makes no sense for carriers, or Palm. Why allow you to keep your old Treo and just load a $150 upgrade when carreirs can make you extend your contract or pay full retail for a new Treo. This is what happened with the 650. Rather than giving us a ROM image that fixed things, we got the 680. I do expect that the new device will have the form factor of the 680.

No worries for me, I still like the Palm OS and love my new 680.

    Palm III -> Palm V -> Blue Palm Vx w/Omnisky -> Treo 270 -> Treo 600 -> Treo 650 -> Treo 680

the 700p and 700wx most certainly use 2 different screens. I am already involved in a project to upgrade the 700wx to use 320x320 via a screen swap and a driver hack coupled with setting up the pxa-272 properly to know what size screen it'll have. Basically, for the 700wx to use 320x320 you need 3 things:
    1) Screen replacement (650 screen works)
    2) CPU boot flags hack (setting up the properly pixels per line and line numbers)
    3) Hacking the driver for wm5 to do 1.5 time multiples

For #3, there is some virtual display software already out that is able to hack the driver for us, it detects the pxa flags resolution and will allow 320x320 to run in wm5... #2 is what I'm playing with... Anyone who understand what I just said, please feel free to come help out!

If they DID release an update $150 is waayy too much. $40 is the more common fee they have been asking so far for an OS upgrade.

LoL, I've never seen Palm do such an upgrade (other than 5.4.x to 5.4.y) and they won't start now. I must be REALLY into the dark side of things when I start agreeing with Sur...

I think all you need to do is look at history which always tend to repeat itself. Why would palm allow an upgrade when they can do some cosmetic changes and sell you a new device to attract new subscribers and make more money getting people to upgrade to a completely new device?

I didn't specify Palm offering the upgrade.

Is it even feasible to upgrade it?

I have a question, are 700WX capable of upgrading to WM6 with the current memory/rom/hardware?

Yes, the hardware is perfectly capable of supporting WM6. WM6 is really just WM5 Second Edition, and the hardware requirement specs remain the same. In fact devices with 200 MHz processors, 64 MB ram and 128 MB storage will continue to be released. The T-Mobile Dash is being upgraded, and has the same specs as above.

Don't be surprised to hear some bizarre excuse from Palm however. They did not even bring the threaded SMS messaging to the 700wx.
