Like the title says, can I upgrade my Treo 700w with WM5 to WM6 when it comes out?

When VZW gets the 700wx I'll probably get a 700wx b/c my 700w is messed up (and I have the insurance) so if the 700w can't run WM6, could the 700wx?

Probably not. The Treos run Palm customizations on the ROMs and it's highly unlikely that you could just run a ROM update and have everything work the way it should. That being said, if Palm were to release an update themselves, it could be feasible, but it's more than likely they'll wait and release a whole new device to drive sales.

I don't think there's much about the hardware that will be different in WM6 devices with the exception of BT radios and the like, but I may also be wrong.

I hope not... I'm actually happy with my 700wx... don't know if I want MS or palm fussing around with the device.

I just confirmed this for myself-- you CAN flash the Treo 700w with the Verizon 1.24 update meant for the 700WX if you do it using the SD updater method so that you have WM6, which is working fine for me.

Just make sure you do it from the bootloader-- remove the battery, insert the SD updater card, press and hold the 'volume up' button and then insert the battery. It will ask if you want to update the ROM- first plug the power cable to the phone, set the phone down on a flat surface and press 'up' to confirm. It will take about 10-15 minutes to flash.

    Congratulations on your updated phone.

I can't seem to be able to download the 1.24 update.
I even tried to get support to give me a dummy SN but they figured out my phone was not a 700wx and I was denied.

Where can I get this file?

    Follow the link.

You cannot get an official Verizon upgrade for a 700w. I recommend one of the custom WM5 ROM's, it'll run *MUCH* faster and better than the official Verizon ROM.

Ebag is too modest. I've used his stripped WM6 ROM successfully on my 700W.

I've had about 50/50 feedback on the WM6 ROM's on a 700w. Seems about half of the people love it, half hate it. If you don't mind it being a bit on the slow side (not unusable, just a tad slow) then there shouldn't be anything wrong with using it.

WM6 on a 700w will be slow. It'll be much faster than the Verizon ROM, but it's still not going to be speedy. But if you want/need HTML e-mail and better exchange support, your options are kinda limited.

If you don't want/need that, then the WM5 ROM (IMHO) is the way to go. I've had people tell me that the custom WM5 ROM makes their 700w feel like a 700wx. I might have a line on a 700w (you know who you are! ) so I might get to find out for myself.

Only if a ROM can add a new hardware radio to your device.
