man, what is up with cingular/750?
I went in to a cingular store here in chicago to check out the new 750....
my 8525 had 695kpbs at the store.
I put my sim card in the 750 and dsl'd the thing about 5 times.....
it had the U displayed but tested 200-300kbps each time.
    BAD news for Cingy.
Gsm/edge speeds suck (better off with 700p)....
The only real value with the 750 is the 3G speeds....imo. The small screen will be obsolete in a converged device by the end of the year.
It'l work itself out i'm sure but....i'd bring mine back in a heartbeat if my new 750 did that...
    screw the hack(@399bucks or whatever).
Only palm/cingular could bungle the release of this product....(given the hype...which they were well aware of).
Again, it might just of been my particular device...but given the corroboration with other posts here...i'd say cingular is in for a little angst.

    1) If I do a hard reset, do I have to install/run the tweak again?
    2) Does the tweak have to remain installed?
    3) What happens when the firmware comes out? Do we need to remove the tweak first?

    Thanks.
If you do a Hard Reset, it will wipe out the tweak. So you'll need to re-install. Recommend you save the hack and any other such essential programs to a mini-SD card.

Same story with a new firmware. The new firmware will hopefully eliminate the need for the tweak, but in any case the tweak won't be there when it is complete.

    Hope that helps.

That's because you were getting UMTS speeds, and not HSDPA. Palm is supposed to release an update this quarter that will give the 750 HSDPA.

    ok.....
but the rep, who's always seemed very knowledgable (and they should be regarding data speeds...its their forte')..
    assured me it was ''3G-ready''.

Well he's right it is 3G ready it's UMTS not the faster HSDPA. But it is 3G

ya, the best speed-test result I got with the hack & the cingular 750, was 400kb...I was in the cingular store w/blackjack that was getting 900+ in my area...so am I hearing there's just no way to get the magic "H" til the (dreaded) official release comes, right?
  9. #109
...oh, & I have the "hs" set in 'start-up' folder...
  10. #110
...last thing, is the measurement of 'getting' hsdpa over what speed, again? (400kb?)...otherwise how can u tell on a device that just gives you a "U" exactly?...out.

The 8525 has HSDPA and the 750 does not. The 200-300 speeds your getting is about right for UMTS.

I was getting 300's with UMTS and with the hack, I'm getting 700-800. The phone still says "U" whether you're on UMTS or HSDPA. The only way you can tell is the speed.

Look this is easy. The Treo 750 is a 3G phone.

That means the Treo 750 comes HSDPA capable BUT NOT enabled.

Thus the Treo 750 speed tests will run at UMTS speed - I believe that is the 300s you referenced.

If you install the hack referenced in this thread - you go from the 300s to 800/900s range. Otherwise stated - you enable the disabled HSDPA capability.

so, ok, I understood how the hack works and that if you hard reset it goes away. I also understood the upgrade in speed, but now, can you guys tell me disadvantages? Instability in data connection? Breaking other things in the firmware? Does it affect DUN?

Been a few users that have reported some problems - but of the many that have download the problems have been limited.

The great part about this hack is it is so easy to undo. Simply go in remove the files and disable the same way you in enabled and you're back to the way you were.

You DO NOT have to do a hard reset. Simply a soft reset after doing the above.

    Good luck.

Just wanted to post my thanks to the OP of this thread. Got the 750 on Wednesday and was disheartened when my co-worker's blackjack was stomping my speed; now I'm pulling the same 850Kb that he is. Had no problems getting the little hack to work, great instructions. Thanks! BTW the 750 is the best device I've owned so far - Rock on!

Early in the 750 deployment, other answers were offered without substance except for the idea that there would be a charge to "unlock/enable" hsdpa. Found this answer for free.

Providing it is a little payback for all the other work so many others also do for free that has helped through the years.

is the only way to get the sethspda.exe file onto the 750 to use a mini sd card? I get access denied every time I try to copy it over. Any way to get around this without using a mini sd card?

    1. Are you using Activesynch from your computer to your Treo 750?

    2. Are using the Explore button in Activesynch?

If you are and access is still denied, try attaching it to an email and downloading it to MyDocuments on the Treo.

    Hope that helps.

PS You might try Total Commander - its a free file manager and register editor. Here's the link.
