How do I get AIM to work on my 700wx??

Sorry if this is too basic, but i'm coming from a 650.

There are several instant messaging programs reviewed here. A search will find what you are looking for.

I personally use AIM forwarding to send an sms text message to my phone when I'm signed off of AIM and someone sends me an IM. That in combination with the Palm Messaging app makes a good solution for AIM when you are away from your computer.

hannip, I just did a search for AIM and nothing actually related to aim came up. Could you link to one such thread to get me and oritreo started?

well, I went back and tried a few variations. Now I see some threads....sort of......but let me be more specific then. AIM for FREE. Why should i pay a third party to hook me up to something that is free? am i missing something here?

This is what I found when I searched for AIM.

This thread claims Agile messenger is free.

This thread claims it's not free.

Here is another discussion on it.

    The simple answer.

More votes for AIM forwarding (which is free btw if you already pay for an sms package).

This link discusses the free UK version of AIM.

Here is the direct link for AIM UK.
    http://info.aol.co.uk/aim/wince/index.html

It's not perfect, but it's free and it works for the most part. If I remember right you have to make a web connection before trying to sign in using this version. It was designed for wince2003 so it's usability on wm5 is limited.

Edit: I just tried the free AIM again and it still works. You need to connect to the web first like I said. Remember though with IM clients such as this the session will disconnect when your PDA goes into suspend so if you want to stay logged in you have to disable suspend in the power settings.

Edit2: One annoying thing about the free AIM app is that the soft keyboard always pops up when you start an instant message. On the treo the soft keyboard is not needed. You can disable it by changing the following registry value.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip\AllowChange=0

If you find the soft keyboard handy at times you can follow the instructions here to make it selectable.

thanks hannip....great source...someone on the admin should add this to a FAQ section.

anyhow, I got the distinct impression that WM5 is kind of an unknown for IMing for free. Which totally surprises me, as my 3 year old piece of crap phone I just got rid of had both AIM and Yahoo IM mobile versions already in the phone set up. Not greatest thing going, but I could at least do it. Even the AIM Mobile site I went to said that text was not for windows machines....to do the forwarding thing.

    think I'll just wait....for now

excuse me.........IM was not for windows machines....

I'm in the USA, btw....if that makes a difference.

AIM UK works fine for US if that makes a difference. I'm in the US too.

Don't be afraid to try the various WM5 solutions. There is no need to wait. I have never paid for AIM on the 700wx and I use it all the time.

You don't have to do anything to your stock treo phone to use AIM forwarding, but the Palm Messaging app gives you a beautiful AIM like UI around your text messaging. I highly recommend it.

I've been using Trillian on my PC for years for AIM, but it doesn't offer the SMS forwarding feature provided by AIM.

I recall that there was a free utility that would filter out the ads in AIM. Does anyone know about this?

You don't need AIM to use the SMS forwarding feature. You just go to the following url and set it up.

I set up the call forwarding feature. My wife uses Trillian, and would get an "error-not logged' on message. She then tried me from AOL Express (the browser-based AIM), but nothing came through. Do you think messages can only be sent from the AIM client?

hmm, if IM forwarding is enabled your screenname should never be unavailable. Try sending me an IM ftom trillion. My screenname is, yep you guessed it, "hannip".

For anyone watching this thread, neill was able to send IM's to my screenname from trillian and they were forwarded. So IM forwarding is not dependant on using the AIM client.

Neill: If I remember right you have to register your mobile number at that url I gave you above for IM forwarding to work. This involves entering a code that is texted to your phone. Did you do that successfully?

Here is a pointer to a more functional AIM for WM5.

Thanks so much for following up with me on this! I finally got it to work, and it's wonderful! I don't need or miss a chat client :-)

The key was not only registering my number, but registering my phone carrier (Sprint) and my phone. I'd initially left these fields blank, because there were no 700w or 700wx choices; when I selected the 700p, the IM's immmediately began working

I am using IM+, it works pretty well. But one thing I was wondering about is I sometimes see people listed in trillian as being mobile. IM+ doesn't say this when I am logged onto the phone (I use a different aim account on the phone). Do you need a special phone client for this?
  19. #19
Ah, glad you got it working. Yeah, the Palm Messaging app really makes IM forwarding shine on the treo.

Yeah, Neither IM+ or the UK AIM client show the mobile users. These users are actually signed off but have enabled IM forwarding so that any IM's sent to them go to their phone as a text message. You could try sending a request to the IM+ developer to implement that feature.
