My question is, why would I buy an external GPS receiver for my 700wx...why wouldnt I just but a regular GPS system? Other than price...

    Price. As much as anything.

And to have one less piece of equipment to carry with you. Or at least a smaller piece of equipment I should say.

But for me, it was strictly price. I bought a receiver and GPS software for about 1/2 of what I could purchase a regular system. Regular GPS systems are starting to fall in price, though, but at the time it made financial sense for me.

Isnt there a portability factor as well?

It must be that "Swiss-knife" syndrome: attempt to pack everything into one device, despite the limitations of such an approach.

Sometimes the benefits outweigh the limitations :-)
