I am now on my third....and last treo 700. While it is indeed a very good PDA, as a phone, I honestly believe two strings and cans would work better. I live in a fringe area so I will admit that this is probably not fair to treo, but to be honest, the Q does work in the same areas that the treo drops calls or doesn't receive calls.
If you live in either metro or surburban, you probably don't experience this but if you do travel, be forewarned, at least in Redneck, Illinois, you will be very disappointed with a treo

well I live and work in Chicago and I'll tell you that the 700w's phone performance is marginal at best. The worst part of it is any background noise or wind will cause the phone speaker to cut out so you can't hear the person on the other end. I'm on #2 and going to #3 soon.

    I live in San Francisco.

The WX is by far the best phone Palm has made, based on comparing it to the 600, 650 and 700p on Sprint's network out here.

I agree the 700wx is a great device.

Aside from the shortage of memory, I love my 700w. I used to be a power PPC'er with my old ipaqs, but now with the shorter memory and square screen, I stick to more simple applications instead of games, all kinds of apps and skinning with Wisbar. I love my 700w. It is the BEST phone/PDA I've ever had.

Not to be a ****** but I believe the OP said "700w" and said nothing about the 700wx so most of these posts are irrelevant (different hardware, sprint vs. verizon, etc.) Also, most people are saying "this is great compared to other pda/phones" which may be true, but the phone function compared to other phones that are just phones still leaves much to be desired. Yes it is an improvemnt, but still has a long way to go as a PHONE, which I believe was the point of the OP.

Does no one else have the same problem I do with the speaker cutting out with background noise/wind? It's really frustrating. I think it's a CDMA thing/Verizon thing as it used to happen on my old Motorola 730

as a phone i'm not sure what else the 700w/wx series could improve upon. it dials, it receives calls...

I am not going to be getting rid of my 700wx anytime soon and I absolutely LOVE all the features of the PDA AND the PHONE, but I do have to be honest and admit that the reception is a notch below my previous Treo's i.e. 700p, 650. In the fringe areas where I used to be able to hold onto a call with the previously mentioned models, the 700wx drops the call nearly every single time. That has been my experience...YMMV.

The biggest problem with the Treo 700wx is the lack of noise canceling if the microphone. When you're on a call all the background noise is the same volume as your voice. The listener hears everything around you. All the Treos are lacking in this way. My Sprint Mogul and little flip phone both do much better. If this problem were fixed the Treo 700wx would be the best PDA/Phone by far.
