Forget Pocket IE.. use real IE.

I was getting really frustrated with extremely slow page load times using Pocket IE and tried to find a better way to do so. I found one, while it is a semi back door mickey mouse affair.

What I did was GoToMyPC'd my Desktop .. and used the browser on that... so basically Im just remoting into my desktop machine and browsing the internet through it. It is MUCH faster.... MUCH faster!

Can someone explain to me why though?

connection at home > connection on treo? (faster intarweb/no hastles loading pages/etc)

then again, I'm just guessing as I have not used gotomypc-think I should try it?

I'm still using the Treo's connection to remote into my computer at home.. what I think it is, is that IE on the main computer renders images and loads pages much faster.. so all my Treo has to do is refresh the screen.. a lot less information.

    use real IE
If the speed matter for you, use the real Opera, and enjoy.

im not sure quite what you mean solutor.. if you meant use opera on the Pocket PC I assure you it is still much slower than my solution.. even thunderhawk is MUCH slower. If you meant isntead of using IE on the PC use Opera... browsing would be marginally faster... when I mean real IE I was using it as an example.. in actuality I use Firefox.

Good idea. I'd recommend those wanting to try using their desktop to use www.logmein.com instead since it is free.

Thanks for the advice... but what I wanted to point out was the overall solution of slow Pocket IE by remoting to your desktop...regardless of what browser you use..

    Can you share some settings?

I assume you have your desktop set up to VGA or the like, to avoid having to scroll around a page on the Treo?

Do you also set up Firefox to open automatically in a small window, to make it more comparable to the Treo experience?

How much do you scale down the desktop image on your Treo screen?

    What software do you need?

Just use opera for windows and enable the function fit to windows width (or press CTRL+F11) then resize the windows in a useful dimension.

Take a look to the attached image to understand the result.

Solutor, you must have a 650 because that image is 310 wide. Also first poster, there is no need for "Go to my pc". The 700w has terminal services client built right in and it works great. Althought, i only use it in a pinch, but scrolling around the screen is a pain in my ***.

Was just an example image, if you want a 240 pixel wide window, just resize it.

They are going trough all this to surf a little faster? So not only do I need the phone, I would need a computer with high speed internet and then I should leave that computer vulnerable by dmzin'g out of the router so that i can connect with the treo and have my pages load a little faster? I guess Instead of DMZ I can port forward, however one port open is one port too many.

Pro's vs cons, I rather be a little slow, than leave my computer exposed to the script kiddies and borred hackers.

its not a little faster.. its A LOT faster.

I can barely notice the difference between my desktop speed and my treo... pages load up instantly now... it seems like real broadband surfing... not like slow Pocket IE bottleneck.

I did what solutor did and resized my screens. GoToMyPC has a zoom in zoom out feature so I zoom out... to see what window i want to go to.. then zoom in. Slick as snot.. I will never go back to Pocket IE.

I used to use GoToMyPC PcoketView for this, along with accessing my company's ACT database, but lately I've been unable to keep my available memory above 8MB long enough to run it. Now it just crashes with a low memory error - even after doing a soft reset first. Dammit these memory errors are killing me....

happypappy, i guess just think of terminal services as "go to my pc" only included in every copy of windows, and free, it lets you log in to any win xp computer over the internet, as if you were sitting in front of it

"I guess Instead of DMZ I can port forward, however one port open is one port too many."

One open port is too many? Thank god you dont run every IT department, or there would be no internet.

exactly... known as the progress road block.. these types always say "can't"... "the system can't do it" ... instead of saying "lets find a way" ... "lets try"... be a yes man.. not a no man.

What treo owner doesn't have a computer with high speed internet nowadays?

Oh I forgot to mention I had returned the treo for a XV6700 with more memory.
