    The device is booting and running webOS 2.2.4

    New profile created with wifi activated, now installing Preware and Govnah

    Yeah looks like you flash was bad, I would make sure you have a good environment first, rebuild linux or whatever you are using... Those customizations are needed and include the HP App catalog... as you failed on them that IPK which is part of the ROOTFS.TAR file
    I assume it got corrupted on taring/or gzip process... as those parts are nothing I take apart...

    FYI I am working on a Uber-Kernel build, I have a build in the previous page that uses the IPK, later after work I will post a new script which will extract the Uber-Kernel from the IPK and build it into the Source...

    just dropping in to inform people the test-wr-preplus-2.2.4 (v21) works better on the plus than what hakost reports on the minus - everything is working as expected, some areas faster than 2.1, some areas slower. I had to do 3 battery pulls (after doctor, after messaging plugins, after skype add) but it was no biggie.

    Unfortunately until kernels are ported and NuttyBunny manages to fix the messaging plugins it is of no use to me, so i doc'd back to 2.1.0. Keep up the great work John, Kay and Rod.

    I installed the UberKernel script and managed to restore completely w/o a battery pull (except when ROM verification failed, of course). That's a first!

    I had previously stepped back to version 19 script and installed UK. My previous, seemingly very stable settings were: Screenstate > 800 mhz > CFQ > Westwood w/compache enabled.

    Although UK was installed (UK icon visible), there didn't seem to be any UK specific setting when using Govanah until I restored the Preware Saved Packages List. It seems funny that UK would re-install via the Saved Packages List if it were actually installed originally, but the stability seems to suggest that is was really there.

    Anyway, fully restored w/o battery pull further suggests that the UK is an important element to a successful upgrade, (IMHO, of course).

    Yeah knew that would happen... So I pulled apart the Kernel IPK...
    I am on a MAC so I used tar -xzf kernel_file and it extracted the ipk..
    then I changed the postinst and prerm to know about the 2.2.4 world...
    then used the IPK package builder and built a new IPK (3.5M when zipped)...

    As I can't post that anywhere... I can only inform other how to make a IPK to work with 2.2.4 PRE/PRE+

    I added the 2.2.4 lines in between the following lines...

    case "${VERSION}" in
    2.1.0 )
    echo "Kernel confirmed to be compatible with this webOS version"
    ;;
    2.2.4 )
    echo "Kernel confirmed to be compatible with this webOS version"
    ;;
    * )
    echo "Kernel is not compatible with this webOS version, aborting"
    exit 1
    ;;
    esac

    Worked great, but... the other thing I was thinking was extracting the IPK (but GNUTAR does not seem to like the IPK even thought TAR on the MAC does...) then building a new kernel structure but if it only works on MAC, then it won't be good for the general public... but seems a lot of magic for an easy fix, have the webosinternals team post the kernel in a tar on the web, which has the correct .control, .list, & .md5sums... Rod Help...

    It's a two minute job with Preware afterwards - you can survive with the stock kernel for that long. We'll get a 2.2.4 compatible Pre+ kernel into the normal feeds soon.

    Well, two points though, 1st the existing IPK process, although works, does not update the modules correctly to be put into a doctor (ROM verification), for instance the correct management files (.control, .list, and .md5sums) are not updated, 2nd point if the Kernel's are designed to be put into the doctor this would be more like an Android ROM, not that it has to evolve to that, but as an open source platform, it should change to suite the needs of the platform. I am not typing (saying would be incorrect english) that PreWare is bad, just looking at alternative ways of incorporating kernels into a doctor...

    I have not had the time, but one of these days, maybe I will but until then, I was hoping someone would take the source files (kernel) published for the PRE2 (kernel-image-2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430) and compile them to a PREPLUS (kernel-image-2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430), then we could during the doctor swap out the PRE2 kernel for the PREPLUS. This would give us a full Doctor with all the rights kernel hooks... Instead of ripping the PREPLUS 2.1.0 Kernel, and forcing it to work with the 2.2.4 build...

    I am thinking the main issue with stability for WebOS 2.2.4 on the Pre/Pre+ is the kernel itself... I am looking over at the system logs and the kernel has lots of messages I am attempting to decipher...

    I personally see that as a step backwards for end-user choice (being able to mix and match whatever kernel you want from Preware with whatever other patches and apps you want to install), fragmentation (having a million different "ROMz" distributed for something that you can "cook" yourself in Preware just by choosing what *you* want) and obsolesence (users needing to wait for a new "ROMz" to be produced after a new kernel release, instead of just being able to update the kernel at will).

    See I agree, it is a step backwards, but the existing Pre/Pre+ WebOS 2.1.0 Kernel is unstable, I have several people messaging me about how they have to pull the battery until they got Uber-Kernel installed... The issue is if I had a real Pre/Pre+ WebOS 2.2.4 Kernel, it could be put in the build from the start, stoping the battery pull issues... I have heard USB drives have gotten corrupt from the battery pull... Just trying to find alternative methods of making the Doctor Stable... This to me is a step in the forward as well... I am trying to make everyone think, can it be done, should it be done, why should it not be done...

    I also understand your point of view concerning PreWare... it is a nice utility for Kernels/Patches/Homebrew software... but I also want a Doctor that works out of the gate... I am looking at this as a developer and as a teacher and as a student... We only learn from our mistakes, at least according to "Meet the Robinsons", sorry I have kids...

    I'm flashing my O2 Pre- with meta-doctor now... hope for me xD

    At the end of flash, I'll try to re-size the usb swap to increase the RAM: there are drawbacks about this?

    Will there ever be a doctor for this for a sprint pre? I'm so dumb with this I don't have linux.

    Making sure that the meta-doctor creates a basic stable working system is indeed the correct goal.

    We need to understand *why* the stock kernel is not stable for some people, but is stable for others.

    I would look first at whether the people reporting instability are actually on a Pre- with severely limited RAM, rather than the Pre+ ...

    You seem to be confusing the installation of the kernel (which is independent of Preware saved packages list) with the display of pre-configured profiles in Govnah (which can be altered by Save/Restore restoring your profiles).

    When in doubt, uninstall Govnah (which will wipe out all your possibly-obsolete profiles), and then reinstall it. Then go into advanced settings to see what the kernel can do.

    Pre-defined Govnah profiles are just that - a set of predefined conveniences. When you are alpha or beta testing something, you should be aware that the predefined items are usually for the stable releases, and you will need to go into advanced settings to define your own custom profile to match the kernel you are running.

    Thanks. I rolled the Govanah and UK comments together and didn't really mean to. What was confusing me was that UberKernel would install over a previous installation when I ran the "Saved Packages List" 'install all' and was able to reinstall UK. I just didn't understand the way the kernel verification worked.

    As far as the Govanah profiles, I was, I guess, just observing that the way that John's doctor installed the Kernel, the profiles didn't show up without another UK install (via the "Saved Packages List").

    BTW, the back and forth about how to include/make available the kernel is interesting and just makes me even more appreciative of the way webos-internals continues to improve the webOS experience. Just the fact that UK improves the stability of an unreleased upgrade is pretty incredible to me. It continues to make me feel optimistic about the future of webOS.

    And now, my 2 year old Pre + is up-to-date and stable! Very nice!
