I'm traveling to Israel in a few days and was wonderinf if the GPS from the phone would work, i geuss you would also need a data connection to get the maps but just figured i'd see if it would work?

    Thanks

I believe the GPS works. Last year, I went to the UK and used the "Where's My Car?" app to remember where I parked the car when I visited an amusement park. The maps don't work, but the GPS did.

Nope, unless you have wifi or data connection(which you wouldn't with CDMA phone in Europe).
You need to do some extra steps to enable this:

Get Navit and preload the maps - works like charm.
Did that on my original pre and most likely will do it on my new frankenpre2.
