Backlight not turning on or off properly

For the past couple weeks I've been having major problems with my Sprint Pre. The screen will not turn on when I open it, press the power button or any other button for that matter. I found that pressing the power button and center button at the same time many times will sometimes cause the screen to finally turn on. However, once on, it will not turn the backlight off.

The screen will go black as set by the screen timer, but the backlight itself will stay on and drain my battery. Sometimes it will go off on it's own after a while, but then I have to use my power button and center button smashing method to get it on again.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this I would be very grateful.
