Not physically, but something in my pre is not right. Modem/radio is not staying connected to 3G even with strong signal in the stores. Couple of failed doctor images with errors like this

    WARNING: Flash Failure
err -1 "Error Updating Modem Firmware!!!"

After enough of this it now boots with 1.4.0 loaded but still no data. Couple of patches including phone menu stuff. How can I reset this thing and fix the modem? My BB is back on duty ATM :P

BTW Girl at VZ store had no idea what to do, just that she hates this phone, lol. Now to their credit, they did have a working Pre2 on the floor and it worked very very well nice and snappy. Yet they still hate on those. They wanted $199 discounted to $149 for that phone still... no wonder they don't sell any.

have you tried a different doctor? If not, download a new copy and try it out.

Also, you may want to run the Quick Tests found in the Device Info menu. There is a modem test.

Well unfortunately it's stuck now where I need to sign into my palm profile but there is no data signal to do so. Is there another way to get the quick test?

Update: flashed / doctored / whatever'd 2.1.0 onto the pre+ today. Thanks, #webos-internals! Only problem is the radio problem is still here... can't maintain 1x, 3G/EV connections and the thing keeps going into 'Emergency Mode' and I end up yanking the battery.

Is a comms swap the only way to get the modem working right? It had been working alright up to a few days ago.

Tried flashing back to 1.4.5 and keeps failing - not sure why the 2.1 script completed where these failed.

    Hi kevets,

did you find a solution yet? I wanted to flash my pre - bakc to 1.4.5 form 2.1.0. Same error "Error updating modem firmware". With 1.4.5 and with todays new 1.4.5.1 metadoctor

    Pre is unusable now!

    Marcel
  9.    #9
My Pre is still unusable. Since my last post I've tried running through the Modem FW flash on the metadoctor site which was unsuccessful also. Pretty sure I followed the steps correctly. I had redoctored it using metadoctor to 2.1.0 with the bypass activation/dev mode options set, pulled the castle CDMA file out of the resulting doctor image, copied it into place and got linux access, but when i ran the commands to update it was still hanging when trying to open the modem connection.

Has anyone done this successfully on a phone w/ this problem? I really don't think I want to do a comm boards swap, but want to use this as my primary phone again.

    Hi,
I tried 1.4.5 & meta-dr 1.4.5.1 10 times! No help. The only way to use the phone again for me was meta doctoring it to 2.1.0 again. I had trouble entering the PIN at first start. After several tries it worked and now I can use it with 2.1.0. I'd prefer to use it with 1.4.5 to test my apps. As primary phone I use my pre 2. Someone told me to try doctor 1.1.2, but I in webosinternals list the link is obsolete.

ok i've got 2.1.0 meta doctor vzw image flashed onto it. I also have downloaded the 1.4.5.1 release from the palm website. Can I use the castlecdma_evt1_fw.tar from the 1.4.5.1 vzw image for this? About to try it again after a reboot. Battery 88%

i got the ModemFW flash to complete by running it with the following option:

    PmModemUpdater<castlecdma_evt1_fw.tar -m

However, still no indication of a 3G signal when I power it back on... haven't tried activating / reprogramming it with VZ yet cause I've been down this road and had to jump through all the hoops to activate my BB again. Shouldn't I be able to see a 3G icon or something if this did the trick?

Here's what I have under the ##DATA# screen:
username: changed it to my number@vzw3g.com
AAA password and HA password look like a bunch of x's
    SPI HA: 300
    SPI AAA: 2
    Rev Tunneling: yes
    M Home Address: 0.0.0.0
    Primary Home: 255.255.255.255
    Secondary Home: 255.255.255.255

    Under Browser I have...
    Primary NGG: 0.0.0.0
    Port: 0
    Secure Port: 0
Secondary NGG and port settings are empty

    MMSC URL: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms:80
    MCD URL: undefined

    Under 'advanced':
    evrc for all vocoder settings
    Slot mode: yes
    Slot index: 2
    Home NID: 65535
    Home SID: 18
    Lock Code: 0000
    MCC: 310
    MNC: 00
    ACCOLC: 0
    Home Sys Reg: yes
    FSID Reg: yes
    FNID Reg: yes
    IPADDRESS: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    Port: YYYY
    SPI AAA Indicator: yes
    SPI Home Agent Indicator: yes.

Are these even close? Currently I just have 3/5 signal bars but no 3G icon (have not dialed *228 to try activation).

But after reboot the pre still keeps spinning and dmesg shows a modem timeout

    And hint?

Yeah I think we are at the same point with these phones. Is yours a Verizon Pre+ too? I am wondering now if I have the right programming in my ##DATA# menu, for it to be able to connect to things (not totally knowledgeable of the ins and outs of these settings and their relevance). Or, if the settings in there even matter. Have you tried running through the activation/OTA programming by doing *228 after 'flashing' the modem?

Welp, glad someone is able to get something out of this! lol

Just redoctored using meta-doctor script and it ran just fine but still no 3G. Even went through and activated the phone again. Voice signal and WiFi work fine but I'm not always near a wifi network so I need to be able to tether with this thing.

So.... try re-flashing the modem and see what happens? Not totally confident this thing will ever be the same.

1st attempt failed... ran PmModemUpdater<castlecdmafw.tar -f and it got as far as "Start reading NV item from modem ...... 0559" and hung. Going to retry using -m next. Blah!

edit: ran with -m and it completed but I'm afraid this is not a good sign. 2nd screenshot is the output of PmModemUpdater -v and it has a line in there "Open Port /dev/modemdiag Failed (5=Input/output error)!"

Is this recoverable? Still no 3G after rebooting.

Just logging things to keep track of stuff that happens. Still getting errors running a 'standard' verizon 1.4.5.1 doctor. Errors out at 64% with the following:
INFO: Modem Updater: Gathering device details... May 26, 2011 6:59:00 PM com. - Pastebin.com

Got memboot mode up and running (install Palm SDK from palm.com, put phone in recovery mode, extract .uImage file from WebOS.tar file from the doctor image, and run 'novacom boot mem:// < nova-blahblah.uImage' and press enter) and now have a root@palm-webos-device:/# prompt when I connect in novaterm. Looking now for the commands to test/reset/reprogram the modem to get it working again. Still need the qualcomm programmer i may need to google some more for that one. Believe that my NVRAM files may be corrupted.

Yep I've been all over that page - very good stuff btw! I've hit a problem a couple of times where it stalls out at the step where it says:

"Start reading NV item from modem . . . . 5182" and doesn't advance beyond that. Should I just keep trying?

I suspect you have hardware issues.
