So we received another pre plus from a relative that he had used before. I called to ask if we could activate it on another line without the data plan and they said no? I thought you only needed a data plan if you bought the phone at a 2yr contract price? Can someone fill me in here? We really want this pre to work :/

if it is active as a phone, it must have the $29 data plan.

if you just want to use it like an ipod wifi only) then get 'metadoctor' from the homebrew section.

that's how developers work with them without having monthly service for each phone.

dangit. :/ Yeah we needa use it as a phone. We can't like put a data block on it or something?

it literally needs a data connection to work. The data fees would kill you. $29/month for more pre goodness, that's just a few less trips to starbucks... (grin)

VZW's policy is simply +$10/mo for media phones on their network or +$30/mo for smart phones on their network. No longer any way around it.

just wanted to point out that there is a little easier way to activate without using meta doctor.

scroll down to Running the Activation-Bypass Tool

Per Verizons policy - SmartPhones must have data plans! Another way they stick it to their customers.
    Palm m130 > Verizon Trēo 650 > Verizon Trēo 755p > Verizon Palm Prē Plus > TouchPad > Verizon Palm Prē 2

in this case it isn't just a policy. The pre won't actually work without connecting to the internet.

Before you could pay for mb, so you could have that option, activate the phone, and then just turn off the internet, so you could still use it as a phone and nothing more. Now you have to get the mandatory 30 dollars.

Are you referring to the initial set-up or on-going? There are ways to turn wifi and data usage off (via patches).

    Well this really sucks.. :/

a smartphone without a data plan is like a car without seats. If it's of no value to you sell it and get a regular phone. But..smart phones have a tendency to prove their value once in your hands.

both setup and ongoing require commu.ication to the cloud services at oalm amd verizon or it won't work. That is my understanding.
