To the OP, she should have immediately asked to speak to a manager. If he's WAS the manager, she should have asked for the regional manager, and so on.

There is no way any decent business is going to deny a sale just because the salesperson thinks they should go with something different.

In fact, she should have gone all the way up to the point that she would have had to pay and then said "I think I will take my business to another VZW store that wants it."

While I have had many similar experiences as a Verizon customer since owning my Pre, it is due to an amazing Verizon customer service specialist that I even have a pre, or know anything about webOS. I was due for an upgrade, as I still was using my Alltel phone (I was switched to verizon in the buyout), and needed a new phone, and was ready to get my first smart phone. Went in to see what my non blackberry options were (brother has a curve and I hate it.) and she immediately showed me the pre, one because it was buy one get one free, and it came with free mobile hotspot. She said the store manager had one and used it for his families internet at home, and she raved about the gesture based UI, and I never liked big phone, loved that it had a keyboard, and ultimately was sold on the price. She also took my phone number and called me several times over the next couple of days to make sure I had it all setup okay. I went back two days later to buy one for my wife, and the same woman was not there, however the one who helped me made sure the first woman got the commission.

Since then I have not had a positive experience regarding palm devices in a verizon store, however the in store specialists have made it clear they are sore that Palm didn't go with them for their launch, and basically Verizon has a good deal with their Droids. Droids have made verizon the leading mobile service provider in an iphone ridden world.

Check out the new Droid commercials where folks are turning into robots! VZW is playing everyone for the money and folks are like "cool, I...want...to...be...a....ro-bot!" Sheesh.
"just like your rims still spin even after your car stops/ then where will you spend eternity after your heart stops huh?"

    This is the honest version:

Rep: That pebble-ish thing with the swipy stuff? I haven't heard of that thing since April! Since family takes up a lot of time and I no longer feel satisfied by selling overly-hyped pieces of metal I'll just talk up the phone that I have a prompt for behind the counter. Please wait here while I update my status on facebook about a problem customer.
In this instance, no one asked the rep to explain the Pre. They already knew about the Pre. I honestly think it's a combination of things: they're trying to sell what they know and what they get commission on; they accept bad press w/o their own experience. I don't think this same situation would have occurred if the customer was asking for some type of old Blackberry derivative.

To actually try to talk a customer out of the device that they want isn't good customer service. To advise them, "I haven't heard good things about that device, but I have heard good things about this other one," is okay. But don't try to hard-sell the customer on something else.

If I go to a car lot that sells Hyndais and VWs knowing that I want a Hyndai, because previous experience or advise from people I know and trust, I don't want the salesman to hard-sell me on the VW or to practically refuse to sell me the Hyndai. That's annoying and can be taken as disrespectful or belittling; "Look little person w/o knowledge, I know what product is best for you. Accept my advise or be bludgeoned."

Regardless, I've convinced several people to buy them. Recently a friend of mine went into a Verizon store (after some gentle nudging of another friend of mine and I) to use her upgrade and get a Pre Plus.

The sales guy essentially screwed himself out of a sale...

She goes in and says she wants the Pre Plus.

He says, "Have you checked out the Droid?" And starts going through the features with her.

She says, "Yeah, but I'd like the Pre..."

He continued, "The Pre isn't a very good phone... you should get a Droid." He then pulls HIS personal Droid out and begins showing her stuff.

She goes, "I have two friends with Pres and they both really like them. And I have a friend with a Droid and he hates it..."

He said, "The Pre has a lot of software problems... (this was the point of the story my jaw dropped open, because if there is ANYTHING good about the Pre, it's WebOS... the SOFTWARE! And I know the hardware build quality of the Pre Plus' are a lot better from what I've heard and seen as well) ...you really should definitely get the Droid."

She eventually got so frustrated and fed up with the guy, she left. Homeboy lost an activation and whatever sort of commission/quota VZW employees work off of because he was so forcefully trying to convince her NOT to get a Pre.

    This. Is. Ridiculous.
    The insanity must stop.
I'm proposing we ban together as a community of WebOS believers and burn every free standing, mall kiosk, and strip mall containing a VZW down. /sarcasm
This has been going on for a long time. I thought Verizon was supposed to have fixed this problem.

If this thread is going to turn into a ****ing contest regarding who has had the worst experience with Verizon in general, allow me...

I purchased a BlackBerry Storm for my wife as a Valentine's gift. (Don't worry, I did get her other items as well - this was just high on her overall wish list) For the first few months the device operated flawlessly, much to my surprise as I had a BlackBerry World Edition (8830) that performed poorly and required constant attention.

Needless to say the honeymoon was over in April that year and started us on an endless cycle of replacements for the better part of a year. We received no less than seven handset replacements. I know many of you are thinking that by then we should have been offered device alternatives. We were, but based on my wife's needs few handsets (if any) met her special requirements. My wife has Lymes Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis. She has a difficult time grasping things with her hands and hold them for extended periods of time. The Storm has a form factor to it that allowed her to hold the device, rather comfortably, and still use it as a phone. To alleviate any pain from holding the device to her head she used the more than capable speakerphone.

After a lot of back and forth on the phone with Verizon, I was able to get her a replacement phone - an HTC Droid Incredible. Because there was a noticable change in size, thickness and weight they included at no charge the extended battery. Great deal, huh? Sadly, not even HTC makes a case that is designed for the extended battery. It matters because my wife still has problems grasping the Incredible despite adding the battery so she is prone to dropping the phone. Matter of fact, she HAS dropped the phone. The speakerphone is awful, and the phone will at times call people randomly. Rooting the device helps, but again it's something that I wanted to avoid having to do on any phone going forward. My opinion - it should just work.

I was able to further negotiate my wife and I's lines out of contract with no term fees, freeing us to look elsewhere for wireless service. The lightning rod that catapualted my cause into the hands of a manager was that an associate YELLED at me over the phone when I was attempting to get some sort of final resolution on my wife's Storm (which by then had been upgraded to the Storm 2).

People get way too passionate about these devices - devices meant to simplify our lives and make us more productive. Furthermore, you continue to feed the monsters (the carriers) by signing long-term agreements to use phones exlcusively through them. I have resolved not to buy another phone on a two year agreement again. I will source phones off-contract or at most only sign a 12-month agreement to avoid getting ripped off on a device that will get leap frogged by a newer model in 3 months.

I bought a Pre off of Craig's List knowing its shortcomings but confident of its strengths. It is a much more capable device than my previous phone, the Droid Eris, ever was.

When I went to look at the Pre Plus, after researching for months, it was kind of sad. It was stuck in the corner, and when I picked it up, the rep said, "Oh, that's more of a calendar phone." WHA?! Calendar phone ... that still makes me laugh.

So I guess the fact that the phone also browses that web, sends and receives e-mail and has 1,000's of applications in the marketplace to further extend the devices capabilities are just gravy? After all, it's just a calendar phone.

If someone was just slapping on a CDMA or GSM radio to a Palm m130, I would call that a calendar phone. (Or a poor man's Centro)

This, to me, just further illustrates the point that there is more money to be made for the store reps to push and sell BlackBerry or Android OS devices over the Palm Pre and Pixi Plus. Why do talk/text/web on a Palm when you can talk/text/web on an Android-based device? That phone over there? It just does calendar stuff. See this phone over here? It does all of that plus it does HD video and barely fits in your pocket! I make $15 on it when I sell it to you! Oh, the Palm? I make only $3.

I got a Pre off-contract for $60. For $10 I got a touchstone "kit" from Radioshack that included another touchstone cover in the event the one I got with the phone gets scratched up. Had I purchased the phone ON CONTRACT with Verizon I'd be enslaved for two years and paid $50 for the touchstone charger.

The reason I used the word "decent" is because as many folks know, with Sprint you roam on VZW towers for FREE, so if you have (sorry my bad for using the word once again) "decent" Sprint service where you are, maybe it is a good option... for ME and MANY others Sprint is perfect... combine that with the fact that VZW is, well VZW, if you can get the same signal with Sprint service...... why the hell not.
What is descent then? for me it's good 3g [4g] coverage. My brother is on sprint and a recent visit to my 'neck o the woods' saw him hunting for but never finding 3g on his pre. All the while my VZW pre had 3g.
Add to that that in 95% of places I go in Alabama, Verizon users have a better signal, and in many of those places, the only signal... forget 3g.; for me and my fellows in AL, Verizon is a better choice. Also, I can't say I hate getting 19% off because Verizon has a contract with my company.

In case you're wondering, I live in Auburn, AL. it's rural, but not backwoods.

I'm not totally convinced about Verizon. They do need to stop locking their phones down so much, and charging so much, but it's a good compromise.

I think I explained what I meant by "decent" ..... and you are getting "4G" coverage from VZW with your WebOS device??? I think not... Ohhh and thanks for making my point (exactly as you quoted) assuming your brother doesn't have bad coverage where he lives, on a trip he can roam on the VZW towers you use for free, but still have cheaper coverage when at home.

My point was that each person should gauge his own tolerance. For my brother, sprint serves him best. but I wouldn't change to sprint because I wouldn't have 3g or 4g coverage here. So the tradeoff isn't Sprint's 4g verses Verizon's 3g. it's 3g on Verizon or no Gs on sprint in my town. maybe one day sprint's coverage will get better here, but it's not now.
