My wife has (finally) decided she wants a Pre. However, we are still months away from a full $150 upgrade discount.

If I was to buy a used Pre from someone here, for example, can I activate it with Sprint?

Yes as long as it's a Sprint phone with a clean ESN

Edit; BTW Sprint dropped the Pre's price to $50. Sometimes they will honor an upgrade price if you're close and really, really nice. Or if you bi*ch long enough. Either way.

As 9KRacing said... verify the ESN... BEFORE paying for the phone. If you get it from Ebay you have the buyer protection plan to get your money back if needed but it takes at least a couple of weeks to get through the process (happened to me twice with used Pixi's).

Just make sure the seller is willing to give you the ESN and then CHECK IT OUT by calling Sprint. One of the sellers I dealt with posted the ESN but didn't even know what having a clean ESN meant. I assumed since he posted it that it was clean. My mistake.... it took me nearly a month to get my money back.

Also don't trust a used cell phone ebay store just because they sell thousands of phones and claim they check every ESN. They don't.

Just be smart and you should be fine. Even though I had two bad experiences on Ebay, I have had three good Pre/Pixi purchases there and also purchased a GSM Pre from one of the forum users here from Europe that was good.
Clicking the Thanks button is a great way to say... well THANKS

Not to mention, Sprint is also very cool about checking ESNs... they will be super polite and check it in under 30 seconds. They don't want people getting burned either.

I was told last Christmas that after 22 months, customer service (or a retention specialist) will happily change your eligibility date for the $150 off from 24 months to 23 months. If you're really nice or really not nice, they may bump it back to 22 months.

I was able to get my wife's Pre $150 off for Christmas even though she wasn't eligible for the $150 off till mid-January.

Why ebay? You should try craigslist - usually local and cheaper. Meet up with the seller and activate before you pay. You get to see the phone's condition first hand and make sure it works. Did this twice already and very happy. Watch out for scams though since craigslist is a buyer beware site. If they won't let you activate before paying then move on.

P.S. After making sure the phone works, then do a full erase and doctor it to start from scratch.
