The Pre is basically a full blown PC right? Are the usb subsystems from normal linux compatible with what Palm did? If so, is there any chance to get a Pre to use usb devices such as a memory card reader or serial interface?

As I understand it, the Service Discovery Protocol (SDP), Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) are not yet complete for WebOS to allow the USB to function as a full functioning USB port. The protocols were originally implemented for use across USB but extended for use across TCP/IP and Bluetooth. Once these Protocols are developed and included in WebOS the functionality of the USB and Bluetooth should be greatly enhanced.
