I finally decided last week to start installing patches & homebrew apps on my Pre Plus. All was well and I was enjoying the new features until I noticed that the '3G' 'G' 'E' etc. symbols weren't appearing next to the signal bars anymore!

Unfortunately I didn't take note of exactly which patches I had installed (and have now removed them). Mostly they were the ones in the 'tweaks' section of WebOS quickinstall.
I also had Preware installed on the phone.

I realise this isn't much detail to go on, but if anyone can spot an obvious cause or has had this problem any help would be mcuh appreciated!
I'd rather not have the hassle of resetting to factory settings.

    Thanks,

    Gav

Do you have any topbar patches installed?...Anything that shows 'Data Connection" somewhere?...Anywhere?

Or you can try this. Go to the phone app. Then click the top and go to preference and then look for "data" anything and turn it back on.

Superb Jason, thanks! I'd never been into the preferences on the phone app menu, so didn't know there was an option to turn data on/off!
I did have some topbar patches installed, I'll put them back on now that I know how to solve the problem if it happens again.

OK, for anyone who comes across this with a similar problem, for me it was the 'Call duration in call log' patch that caused the issue. It turned off my data usage and also messed up the whole preferences menu in the phone app so I didn't even have the option to turn it back on!
All back to normal without that patch though, I can live without that feature

Yeah I was surprised as I'd have thought it was pretty popular, but I went through the patches one by one and it happened exactly as before when I reinstalled that patch, then was fixed again when I removed it.
Strange that it should do it on my phone but (presumably) not for most others!
