Hi, im coming from both crackberry, and android central. my main phone is a Samsung Moment so ive rooted my phone and everything. Recently my uncle gave me his pre.. he dropped it messed up the power button ive fixed it. Now i need some advice from you guys because i want to optimize this phone just like my moment. I know you guys use the term homebrew which might be the same as rooting.. so can you give me links or advice to a good rom and overclocked homebrew version that i can install on this phone and etc? i want to use it as a 2nd phone for me! one thing as soon as the phone is on it asks for a profile to either create or login so im assuming i have to have the activated before i can do anything or can i just mess with it without having too?

You have a few questions, but if your phone isn't activated, you'll need to use the bypass hack. I've provided the link for you.

Be sure that when you doctor your phone, you use the latest webOS update version.

After you have it working, go to WebOS QuickInstall. I've linked the instructions for you. Use WebOSQI to install Preware. Between Preware and QI, you'll be able to do anything you want with your phone. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use Preware prior to activating your phone. However, QI will let you install everything using your desktop PC. Preware will allow you to hack, patch, and install on the go w/o the need to connect to your PC once your phone is activated.

    Welcome aboard and enjoy.

The Palm phones are always open to you, so it is just a function of adding what you want. Now, there are two ways to add Homebrew(unofficial) applications and patches to your Palm phone.

The first method is WebOS Quick Install. This involves downloading an app to your computer, and then sending it over to your Palm via USB cable. Getting it set up isn't terribly difficult, but can throw off some people new to this stuff.

The second method(which requires WebOS Quick Install for the most part) is to use a homebrew app called Preware. Preware gives you a secondary "store" where you can download apps, patches, and other applications just as if you were using a regular App Store on another platform.

So, first off, you need to have a Java Runtime Environment(JRE) set up and running on your computer.

Next, you need the Palm SDK. Some pages indicate you need the virtual machine, but unless you plan to run the Palm Emulator, that should be something you can skip.

    Then, download WebOS Quick Install.

Finally, and before running Quick Install, you need to put your Pre into Developer Mode. If Dev mode is off, the WebOS Quick Install or other installers just won't see that your Pre is connected.

So, on your Pre, with all apps closed, type on the keyboard:
    upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart

If you have typed this correctly, you will get a popup control that lets you turn on or off Dev Mode. Turn it on, and follow the prompt to reboot the phone.

Connect the cable to the Palm Pre and Computer, and tell the phone "Charge Only".

So, with all of those preliminaries out of the way, here are the locations for what you need:

    Java:
    http:// java.com: Java + You

    Palm SDK:
SDK Download - Palm Developer Center

    WebOS Quick Install:
    http://images.precentral.net/sites/p...ickInstall.jar

When you run the WebOS Quick Install, you will see a blue down-arrow on the right hand side of the window. This will let you pick and choose which applications you want to download. You will WANT to limit yourself to only installing Preware at this point, since Preware will let you download directly to your Pre, rather than via the computer and finally to your Pre.

I know this may seem like a lot, but once you get Java and the SDK installed, downloading WebOS Quick Install will be pretty straight forward. Just go through it one step at a time.

The standalone installer can be found at:
