I'm visiting my parents this weekend, they only have dial-up. Their computer is in need of updating and new software, but it doesn't have a wi-fi card. Can I tether via USB? How?

Buy My Tether. It lets you tether via desktop, but it cost 15 dollars.

Not a bad idea, but there are no shops around. Am I out of luck?

No shops around your parents area or yours? If you can buy one from your area and take it with you. In my opinion even if you have a good cell signal, dialup is much faster.

I would go and buy a USB wireless connector from your closest electronics store (maybe Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.). It will depend on your signal strength on how fast your connection is. Mine has been typically around 1.5 - 2mb, which is around DSL speeds. It has been faster. I am around the Milwaukee area and I have got excellent connection here.
