It seems like received texting SMS messages are displayed as if they are a kind of HTML messages on a Pre. Try the example (I sent it from the iPhone) and see the resulting display.

There are some errors in the example that are not theoretical of nature:
- Multiple spaces are reduced to one space
- Enter is not entering a newline
- Text between < and > may disappear
In SMS text messages these characters should appear.

Theoretical but interesting is that the decimal representation of the @ sign is displayed as an < sign. Here SMS codes and unicodes are mixed up.

Sample text message, test it by sensing it from an iPhone and from a Pre:
Code:
 = newline: =
break: = <br> = <br> = . .5 spaces 5: . . = <br> = at percent: %40 = <br> = at decimal: < = <br> = <br> left in LT GT: <left> = <br>
and the resulting display on a Pre looks like:
Code:
= newline: = break twice: =
=
= . .5 spaces 5: . . =
= at percent: %40 =
= at decimal: < =
= left within LT GT: =
