Long time Linux user here (though know no programming).

Listening to the podcast here and knowing that some say if you start VZNavigator and launch Google maps then GPS works.

This is what I would like to know:

Is the background navigator loading some type of Kernel module and upon killing the process unloading the module? Has anyone run a modprobe -l on this device to see if it is doing this?

Seems to me if the background service HAS to run for any type of GPS, that there must be another module/service/unlocking service that runs when you start Navigator?

Really is hard to hide any service in Linux and would just like to know from anyone whom might be working on this?

    Thanks in advance...

i was thinking the same thing today...except without all the big words and more in the terms of 'can any homebrew guys fix this'

the devs do such great work with seemingly everything it got me to thinking if anything could be done homebrew-wise with this too

Knowing about Linux and not much about the issue, it seems if it was a module/service issue a small script could be written to fix the issue on boot.

I agree the devs do a great job .

it's not just vznavi....sometimes vznavi needs another gps app to gey the gpss going. At this point in my history with this issue if i'm not getting a lock with the first gps app I try after turning on the gps I switch to another gps app...usually it takes 3 tries or so. I give each app several minutes.

Verizon navigator is started on the phone as a service. If this service is stopped you will have zero GPS. This implies (I don't have the phone yet) that the background service is creating the issue to start with.

Most reports say that VZnav can lock a signal within 30 seconds, other fail. There are tricks you can do (I read about) that can make the GPS work. The trick involves starting VZnav first. This implies to me (someone whom knows Linux) that there is some sort of service/module issue.

In Linux everything is done by module loading/unloading. A service simply loads needed modules in order to make said service work, if service is stopped module unloads leaving hardware unable to work.

In other words, there is a module that has to load in order to make GPS work. The only way Verizon can lock down a module or service is with either disabling the module, trying to hide the module, giving the module wrong permissions (this could also be the problem).

If it works in VZnav, there has got to be a way to make it work! Linux is pretty cut and dry after you understand the inner workings. If I can find a way to get into a term after I get mine (is there one?), I will surely try and tinker. If it only needs a simple script, I can do that.

I have been meaning to do this for a while. There is no difference in the modules loaded before or after VZ Nav. This is modprobe -l before and after (same):

    Code:
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/drivers/misc/exmap.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/dspbridge/bridgedriver.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/net/wifi/sd8xxx.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/net/wifi/uap8xxx.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/drivers/block/nbd.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_wait_scan.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/drivers/net/ifb.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/crypto/ecb.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/crypto/pcbc.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/kernel/arch/arm/oprofile/oprofile.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/tisgxgfx/pvrsrvkm.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/tisgxgfx/omaplfb.ko
    /lib/modules/2.6.24-palm-joplin-3430/tisgxgfx/bc_example.ko
However, I've also run a ps -ef before and after VZ Nav. Here is the before:

    Code:

the difference being that before VZ Nav was open, this was running:
    Code:
    root 1269 1 0 01:13 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -e /dev/fd/9 LunaSysMgr
    root 1743 1269 0 01:15 ? 00:00:00 sleep 10
and after VZ Nav was open, this was running:

    Code:
    root 1752 1 0 01:16 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/contextupload

While there are minor process differences, the one thing I found interesting was right after a reboot, this process was running, even before I started VZ Nav:

    Code:
    root 1152 1 0 01:13 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/vznavigator/VZNavigatorService
This file is binary but its not stripped so you can run strings against it, although it doesnt give much. Some interesting names....

There are two shell script files in the /usr/lib/vznavigator directory which start up the VZNavigatorService. They are sending all output to /dev/null. I will change this to a file and see if I notice anything unusual.

I did however notice something really odd. I can cd into the /usr/lib directory but I cannot do a full listing of the directory - it hangs. Not sure if there's a special character in a filename that's causing the terminal to bork, but I did an ls -l | grep -v lib and got the remaining listing. Nothing unusual to see there.

I'll post back after I watch the vznav start up with output....

the difference being that before VZ Nav was open, this was running:
    Code:
    root 1269 1 0 01:13 ?

I'll post back after I watch the vznav start up with output....
you guys really never cease to amaze me

I would be interested in someone with a Sprint pre running modprobe -l and see if the listing is different (I would assume they both use the same GPS chip).

Can the Sprint OS be loaded on a Verizon phone?
  13. #13
well, I'm not a linux guru (I work more on Solaris) but I can't seem to figure out how the VZNavigator service is starting. There doesn't appear to be chkconfig in this webOS kernel so I'm not sure how else to look at services. I have dug through the startup scripts in etc, including the rc directories and cannot find anything. The only location in the entire fileystem that references VZNavigatorService is in the following files:

    Code:
    /usr/lib/vznavigator/VZNavigatorService.sh
    /usr/lib/vznavigator/VZNavigatorService1.sh
    /etc/event.d/VZNavigatorService

I have changed the startup procedure to log to a file, but it won't dump anything. When I kill the VZNavigatorService process, it respawns but without the modifications and without ever creating the log file. (yes, I did remount rw). Not sure where else this is kicking off....

I just noticed that there are a number of critical errors in the /var/log/messages file. I'm going to parse through that in a bit and see if anything unusual comes up when I start/stop VZNav. I'm also more concerned why there are so many other errors there. It's logging quite a bit of info and that concerns me.

I haven't tried this, so I'm not sure. I figure it probably can't be done because after you doctor your phone, it will ask to activate it. Having your VZ phone come up on Sprint's network won't allow you to log in or get it activated, at least I don't think it will. I remember reading a post elsewhere that there is a possible method to avoid the activation and get wifi, but not sure if that really was possible or not.

OK, so I actually renamed the VZNavigatorService file to something else so it wouldn't respawn and then started it by hand. Opening and closing the VZNav doesn't log anything. I'm going to try and reboot my phone without the file and see what changes happen.... be back shortly

Check /etc/rc.conf for an entry for the startup (where I place all startup items on my Arch system),/etc/inittab. I would also check for a cron job and see if maybe they are using that (sounds odd but possible).

I don't know if it would be much different then the BB world, I used to do the OS from different carriers thing all the time.

    Thanks.

There was no /etc/rc.conf or /etc/inittab file and unfortunately no cron files either. I was able to remove the VZNavigatorService file, reboot the phone and it came up ok, only thing was you couldn't start VZ Nav (It bombed out with an error - this was obviously expected) I did try google maps but that didn't get me a lock. I tried trapster and even YP Mobile, neither of those got me a lock.

I did find something interesting though: The first test I did, I shut off GPS, reboot the phone and then opened Google Maps. What I found odd was that google maps didn't prompt me to use GPS or even turn it on. Neither did trapster or yp mobile. They just gave me the same output I usually get before I open VZ Nav. I'm starting to think that the GPS receiver might not be accessible directly from the apps, but rather cached data from the GPS receiver. I'm wondering if VZ Navigator somehow turns the GPS on or uses its own aGPS to obtain a signal and then cache that info for other programs to use.

I am really interested in knowing what the Sprint Pre processes are. I have a funny feeling that Sprint may have a process that runs in the background which continually logs your GPS info. Maybe that's why I see a number of Sprint Pre users complaining about battery life. Maybe Verizon decided to just shut it down to conserve battery and only turn it on when they need it. Unfortunately if this is the case, they forgot to tell others how to turn it back on. Just guessing here, I'm not conspiring any theories about VZ....

    this:
    /usr/bin/contextupload

Makes me wonder if it does some check with the towers to trigger GPS events. If this is the case then GPS can only be turned on via this service.

I wonder if you can manually call this service and see if GPS would work?

I would also be interested in seeing the Sprint output..

EDIT: Actually makes me wonder if it is a conditional call. like:

    if
    vZnav (whatever the service name)
    then
    /usr/bin/contextupload

hmmm. let me run it manually and see if it grabs anything. My first impression when I saw that was it might have been the process google maps uses to download the actual map over 3G. I'll try this now and see what happens....
