Maybe this is due to previous patched under older builds? I have not noticed anything wrong with Google Maps since I wiped my Palm Pre clean and have not put any patched except my personal Kernel Patch.

Since 1.4, my Google Maps takes forever to come up. It usually sits on the logo screen for at least ten seconds. I've tried on three separate unpatched Pres and gotten the same results. I even doctored and still had the same problem.

It's gotten to the point that I've pretty much abandoned Google Maps in favor of YPmobile. It has some great features missing from Google Maps. The History feature that saves the locations you lookup is particularly useful. It uses Bing maps which are pretty good. The only thing missing is the Google traffic feature, but I just use Houston Transtar site for that.

Wow, my stock pre is fast. Google maps only takes 3-5 seconds to load and I have well over 100 apps loaded on my phone....... I love being lucky for once in my life

I say, remove every patch from your phone... Reimage the sucker and try it from the fresh install.
