NYT: Want A Cheaper 3G iPad Now? Hereís How (Buy a Palm Phone)

I just add those last words ; )

    Want A Cheaper 3G iPad Now? Here’s How. - Gadgetwise Blog - NYTimes.com

The price of a new 3G-connected iPad just dropped.

That version of the iPad isnít due out for about a month, but new discounting by Palm means you could have a 3G-connected iPad sooner and a lot cheaper.

The first iteration of the iPad, available Saturday, will connect to the Internet only by Wi-Fi. The other version, due later this month, will connect to the Internet over Wi-Fi and the AT&T mobile phone network providing a nearly ubiquitous connection (assuming you can get an AT&T connection). Two AT&T cell plans are offered, neither requiring a contract. The $15 one-month plan is capped at 250 megabytes. The $30 one-month plan is unlimited. It also cost $130 more.

The Verizon Palm Pre Plus acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot to make Wi-Fi-only iPads act like 3G iPads.
If you are in the market for a phone and an iPad you can save money.

Buy any one of a number of cell devices that work as Wi-Fi hot spots so you have the same nearly ubiquitous connection youíd have with the iPad 3G. These devices connect to the Internet through the wireless phone network. Among them are Sprintís and Verizonís MiFi 2200, the Palm Pre Plus and the Palm Pixi Plus smartphones.

This is an attractive alternative because the price has just dropped on the Pre Plus, Pixi Plus and their hot spot service.

The Pre at Verizon is now $50, down from $150, and the Pixi is $30, down from $80. (In addition, there is a two-for one-offer: buy one Palm and a second phone of equal or less value is free). Youíd have to get a two-year a contract of course, including a $30 data plan on top of voice and text services.

During this promotion, Verizon has also made the $40-a-month hot spot service free with a ceiling of 5 gigabytes of use (overage costs 5 cents per megabyte).

If you were already poised to buy a phone and an iPad, the Palm deal would appear to give you more downloads for less money and it puts you on 3G right away.

Oh, the irony of more webOS devices selling because of the iPad... Truly a bittersweet proposition.
    Treo 600 > Treo 650 > HTC Mogul (*****!) > HTC Touch Pro (***** squared!) > PRE! > Epic

yeah, but some people might take advantage with this lower costs alternative proposition

Seriously. They need some guerrilla/viral marketing, and then some sick commercials each one showing different things. One could be notifications. One could be multitasking. Etc etc etc.

Yeah definitely. If they don't want to go public with their market they can do it underground which can be just as effective if done properly. Let's see some videos of the pre powering up ipad's all over youtube, guide's on how to connect a pre to the ipad, maybe some ads showing off Mi-Fi, and anything else that can be used to associate the palm pre with the ipad. Maybe we'll get some good publicity from the sort of association.

Yeah, they'll do some more brilliant commercials with that bizarro flowerchild who just finished her joint before the shoots.

Palm has a brilliant nose for marketing. Yeah they'll know how to turn this into an opportunity..pfft.

it seems one particular ipad purchaser used the advice from the article. if you listen to the video towards the end, he mentions that the ipad is picking up his wifi from his "webos phone".

Actually, now that i think about it. i think that was one of engadget's people. mention is at about 3:28.
