    Hello,

It seems like the release of the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus in France by SFR is very close! :-)

The application "SFR Mon Compte" has now made it to the official App Catalog and SFR has released two new applications to the web feed:
    SFR TV
    SFR WiFi

I could not try them since I am on Orange France's network but the first one appears to allow SFR customers to watch live TV on their WebOS phone and the second one to make it easy to connect to SFR WiFi hotspots.

Seems like a good partner for Palm. Like o2 in Germany. Unlike Verizon in the US.

They didn't set a release date yet?

please come out for o2 UK soon...that way i can send my pre into o2 for repair and ask them for the plus...

    Thanks akitayo, that's very interesting.

It is strange for SFR to offer sim-locked units since winners will have to buy subscriptions if they want to fully use their prize...

But the market values are interesting:
Pre Plus: 479 € VAT incl.
Pixi Plus: 349 € VAT incl.

These may actually be the prices of the unlocked units SFR will be selling (mandatory under french law).

If the launch takes place within the next two weeks SFR may well be the first carrier to sell unlocked GSM Pre Plus and Pixi Plus phones.

It happens to all users here in south america, all phones are sim locked as well
that is why I usually buy a US GSM unlocked version when it comes.

You mean the first carrier to sell unlocked GSM in France? Because in Germany is mandatory, I dont know if it is in Spain. But Movistar here none.

The prices are a little high eh?

    1.00 EUR =1.35020 USD

    $647 Palm Pre Plus
    $472 Palm pixi Plus

1] Where did you get these prices from?

2] Is the French law definitely such that the devices must be available unlocked? If so, are they still only available from the network, e.g. SFR.. or any normal mobile retailer??

3] If network/SFR only, how do SFR prevent a regular user obtaining the phone and using it on another network? Maybe they insist you take out a contract? Or do they sell phones sim-free too?

Hope someone from France can help!

In France carriers can sell phones sim-locked and tied to a contract (in which case they are usually heavily subsidised) but they must also sell the unlocked sim-free version at the same time.

Phones are typically sold through the carrier itself as well as through a number of other retailers but this is up to the carrier and phone manufacturer.
For instance iPhones were initially sold only through Orange online and physical stores and then a few select retailers before they eventually allowed all retailers to sell them.

That will probably be the case for import shops but the QWERTZ keyboard didn't stop many individuals from importing phones from Germany.
