The San Francisco Chronicle LOVES the new PALM PRE ADS and in fact loves the PALM PRE! Another great reading article. Take care, Jay

Palm gets it right with latest marketing ad

Palm's starting a new ad campaign that is a thankful departure from the odd batch of ads that accompanied the launch of the Palm Pre last year.

Gone is the ghost-like woman talking all soothingly about how Palm affects, "my life." The new age ads showed off some of the cool of the Palm webOS operating system but what more often than not, you were left haunted by the image of that albino-looking woman.

Now instead of a country setting, Palm's latest ads -- which will debut during the March Madness basketball tournament -- are placed right downtown with an African American woman swiping through projected notifications and screens as she walks down the sidewalk. The soundtrack is a hip hop song with a catchy rhythmic beat.

The new slogan: Life moves fast. Don't miss a thing.

Palm has struggled in its smart phone battle with heavyweights Apple, Research in Motion and Google. According to Gartner, Palm's webOS was the seventh-best selling smart phone platform last year with only 0.7 percent of the worldwide market last year.

It's not because the hardware is inferior. It brings a lot of cool and innovation to the table. But it's been hard for Palm to get out its story and the old ads certainly didn't help.

The new commercial gives people a better sense of what the platform can do and ties it into people's real lives. It's also much more hip and appealing to a younger, tech-savvy crowd. Even the model, in my opinion, is prettier in this ad.

One ad won't change Palm's fortunes but this is definitely a big improvement over its earlier attempts. Let's see if it can help kick-start Palm's business.
