It's frankly the ability to twist your phone like an Oero, showing how loose they get. "Why twist your phone to see? Just leave it alone!" you're probably thinking, but many original Pres would do it by themselves, getting loose and then becoming a wiggly, spinny mess that you could definitely feel moving when swiping and touching, and in severe cases, could see rocking and twisting.

After MULTIPLE calls to Palm and 3 refurbs sent out to me...I was FINALLY able to convince Palm to send me out a brand new in box Pre Plus...but I've had it! Verizon will sell me the Incredible at a one year discount or $269 after rebate. This is a bitter pill to swallow, but the Pre Plus is just unusable to me. I figure the the gazillions of people can type on an iPhone on a virtual keyboard then what the heck!

Luckily for me, I never got around to selling my Treo Pro (Sprint) with all of it's accessories, so that is now posted on eBay. I will sell the brand new in box Pre Plus on eBay, and return my defective P.O.S. Pre plus to Palm and should come out of the ordeal with a little extra cash in my pocket for my troubles. I've been reading around and it looks like there is a wifi tether hack for the Incredible, so once I figure that out I'm not missing anything from the Pre Plus except the keyboard and that hasn't worked for me since day one. AND...SLingbox is coming to Android and I miss that from all of my other Palm phones.

Bye Bye Palm...you kinda suck in the end!

Why would you go through all that trouble only to not even try the new phone before selling it? You know what they say...fourth time's the charm!

Well...the box says the new phone isn't even 1.4 so I'm thinking it's probably the same crappy original build And I figure I'd get the most money for a brand new virgin phone.

There is evidence that it may have been an intermediate run of Pre's that have bad keyboards and that there were good ones both before and after.

So after reading through this forum (and a couple others), mashing keys, etc., I finally had enough, took my phone into Verizon and demanded a NEW warranty replacement. The keyboard on the new phone was completely, and obviously, different - all the keys give a good click, a positive response back, all feel the same, etc. Except my occassional fat finger, there are no typing issues at all.

I'm pretty sure there was a bad run of phones with poor keyboards (which seems to be where this thread ended up as well). What I don't understand is how I call Verizon tech support and Palm tech support and get "We've had no reports of this problem" when I read through hundreds of post on here and elsewhere of people with problems, many of whom indicated they called both Palm and Verizon and made perfectly clear what the problems were.

Palm and Verizon, you dropped the ball on this one, angering and frustrating a lot of people. It seems acknowledging the problem and replacing the bad phones was a very simple fix.

If your phone is having keyboard issues - TAKE IT BACK!!!! I would think it would even fall under the 1-year warranty coverage if you're outside the 30 days. Type in one sentence on the replacement phone they are offering, and trust me, you will know as soon as you touch the keys if you have a bad keyboard or a good one - the difference is that substantial.

I can't even explain what a relief this is for me. Each trip to Verizon to complain about my Pre, I tried other options and compared to the Pre they all seemed clumsy. So much so, that I was thinking I could live with the keyboard issue. I'm glad I didn't settle.

Now if Palm had only not dumped on all us years long loyal users and dropped the Desktop and HotSync. Now I have to figure out which of the syncing options is the least bad.

The Sprint phones have the same issue. The newest 1.4.1 update fixed a lot of the double characters for me (it only does it occasionally now) but it solved it by making missed characters the new concern with like 4 problems per sentence. Go figure.
  8. #328
I called Verizon customer service today. They told me they have never heard of the issue, but based on the way I described it, the tech concluded that it must be software. This is ridiculous. Every time I talk to someone from Verizon, I get a different answer. I give up. Android has officially won.

Called VZW business as I handle my business account. After talking to a tech support person, she is sending me a replacement. No problem really, and I got to tell her all about WebOS Doctor, which she wasn't familiar with. She said it wasn't an official problem but it was "all over the Internet" about the keyboard problem.

This Poster has exactly the right idea. Everyone you must remember that if you go to a TelCompany store or call the telco, the person on the other end of the line does not know about any phone much less the Smartphones. You come to Precentral and/or other sites therefor you know more than they do. That is why I've said all through this thread you need to show them this thread. That's why you need to do things like mention WebOSQI and WebOS Dr because you then become authority over them and they believe you when you tell them that this is not an issue with something you did and that it has all but been taken as gospel that a replacement phone will quell the issue.
I also like that the poster called VZW, as to avoid the problem of it (inevitably) not occurring when you try and show the store employee.

Probably not but maybe Palm will honor the 1 year manufacturer's warranty? I would try them both - what have you got to lose (except a irritating handset that double types)?

I just got my replacement yesterday. It is a refurb but looks like new. There have been a few instances of double letters, but overall it is 95% better. As someone said before, I think it's a combination of hardware and software issues. My original Pre could hardly type one word without double letters or missing characters. On my replacement, I had about a half dozen double last night. BTW, the date on my replacment is 01/10/10.

One funny thing on my replacment was that on the activation screen that is blue, I saw a bunch of splotches in the screen. I tried cleaning it and was kind of ticked because I thought I would have to get another one. However, after activating it, I didn't see the splotches again. Must have been something in the screen graphics. Ha-ha.

Well, my husband and I have had our replacement phones for just a week now.

All I can say is that I am sendiing this from my Pre and would not even attempt such a thing on my old phone.

While I can not say "hardware. For sure" (I don't have the creds for my vote to carry much weight), the two phones are polar opposites.

For us - a hardware exchange fixed our problems. Same patches restored and same update added.

My wife and I took advantage of the BOGO, her's typed just fine while mine had all the issues stated above with the keyboard.
It took two trips to Verizon, (the first being a kiosk where they wouldn't replace it, even though I was still in my initial 30 days ). On my second trip to the retail outlet, they replaced without issue.
Much happier now, all the issues the other phone presented are gone. I recommend persistence and to keep bringing it back until satisfied.

I'm on my 4th pre and never had typing issues until this one. I can text pretty fast, well I could text fast. if i go to fast it misses letters all the time. 100% of the time is when there are two of the same letter, It will look like this, " It wil lok like this".

Hmm, after some digging, I'm starting to believe it is a software issue that is exacerbated by a certain hardware revision of keyboards.

If I put my phone in airplane mode, the phone types quickly and perfectly. I seem to notice dropped keys once in a while, but it happens rarely enough that I'm willing to chalk it up to user error or fat fingering . However, the double/triple lettering is completely gone, and there is no input lag. Keystrokes appear instantaneously. When I do turn on airplane mode though, the letters are randomly dropped or not registered, and sometimes they'll be typed in as two or three letters. Sometimes, hitting a key will do nothing, but hitting a different key will spew out both letters. For example, I can hit H, and see nothing on the screen - then I'd hit R, and all of a sudden "hrrrr" will be typed out on my phone.

Incredibly aggravating. I went from a sprint pre (3 different ones), to a motorola droid . I hated android, and went back to a palm pixi plus. Found out I really liked webOS again, and the pixi still has issues where it'll randomly lock up completely unresponsive for about 7-10 seconds. So, I took that as an excuse to upgrade to a pre plus. big mistake.

update: Whew. I gave palm support a call, and they're honoring the manufacturer's warranty (apparently there are still 341 days left of it, wow). They say a replacement unit will be here within 2-3 days. Verizon denied me the warranty of course - but cantaffordit: that's the best advice I've heard, funny that all the verizon reps I spoke to didn't mention that, haha. I'll have to get insurance first thing, thanked!

verizon will let you buy the insurance when you activate (even if you buy used). So get the insurance and switch it right away.

ok. Here is my update. I am typing this from my replacement phone. It's a refurb with an older build date than my first phone - but the keyboard and build quality is perfect.

when I call verizon for support
I instantly ask them to eascalate me to a 'palm specialist'. They have techs that 'specialize' in various brands - sort of. That always helps to prevent talking to a support rep that can't spell Palm.

so, I had the tier 3 tech reserch the keyboard thing, showed him the threads, etc. He came back and said it had to be hardware, especially since it was getting worse over time.

he sent me a refurb at no charge and it is a world of difference. Excellent build quality. Perfect keyboard. Problem solved.

I suggest that others try the same. Just remember that the person who answers the phone probably won't be able to help you.

I highly recommend pocket mirror if you have wifi at homw. companion link if you want to use a usb cable. both have a free 7 day trial so you can try them. chapura also has one that synca with the old palm desktop 6.22 if you are still using that.
