    Hi,
I'll be living in the US for about 3 months starting February 17th and I'd love to be able to keep my PrPrPré $working$
So far, the only "ok" plan I've seen is the AT&T GoPhone Prepaid plan that seems to offer 100 mb of data for about 20 usd/month.

Any Pre experiences with that plan?

As far as I've seen, there only is T-Mobile and AT&T that run on GSM and T-Mobile starts at 60 usd+ / month O_o

As long as your Pre is unlocked, it will work. If it is an EU Pre, you will get only 2G data speeds on it.

Since the US Pre is CDMA, I wouldn't get any connection on AT&T (GSM)

I guess I have to crunch the numbers now
activation fees, fixed daily usage fees, minutes, messages, ...

    My current German plan:
    - 9 cents for outgoing minutes/sms
    - 10 Euros for 1 GB of data

The US Cellphone landscape is weird

Ha I thought the same thing of Europe when I went with my Treo 650 years ago. I had to buy sim cards in the "tobac" shop and back then data there was incredibly expensive. It was great though, my Tom Tom/phone/text worked all through Europe and for the 2 1/2 months I was there. I went once and roamed on Cingular and it cost me over $1200, ha but I got back and they cut the bill in half.

The there was the time that I spent at least 4 hours over 3 days in the Orange store because they told me the card the sold me was registered to a chick named "Silvi" In fact me and my spouse call our phone GPS's Silvi today because of it.

yeah, at least Germany has come a long way since then
I think it helps a lot when you have more than two providers.
We have 4 "real" providers over here and a LOT of resellsers.
It probably also helps when your country is small enough to actually cover all of it for relatively cheap. This is probably also the reason why we don't have any dropped calls over here.

Are there any "local" providers in the US? (e.g. only for a specific state)

IF You have an unlocked GSM German Palm Pre , it will work (it is proven, several threads discuss it) on AT&T, phone and text messaging and EDGE (not 3G) data.
