    Why woukd you want to open the file?? Just use webos quick install to install ipks on your Pre.

    well you can change settings in ipk files like in the themes or patches so i can change the haptic feedback in phone app or keyboard or whatever, or even change font styles or size

    I think you read the OP's question wrong. "for install on pre" Seems like the OP is a Mac user with a Pre that wants to install apps onto their Pre.

    WebOS Quick Install is Java based, hence can run all current desktop platforms(Mac, Windows, Linux).

    Also consider installing Preware to install straight from your Palm Pre.
