Default I can't find any way for installing palm software.

Hi,

I'm able to install software with "App catalog", but there are some ipk software that I would like to install. The problem is that novacom does not work on my computer, and this is necesary to start "WebOs Quick Install". I downloaded "WebOs Quick Install" and installed it. Also installed "WebOs Doctor" without problem. Recently I updated to Palm WebOs 1.3.1.

Since I have OpenSuse 11.1 on my computer I have to use "alien" to install novacom deb file. Apparently it worked fine. I even run novacomd getting the next message:

linux-umtd:/opt/Palm/novacom # ./novacomd
[2009/12/24 10:36:22] novacomd version novacomd-71 starting...
[2009/12/24 10:36:22] novacomctl socket ready to accept

But when I run novaterm, I get the next message:

javier@linux-umtd:~> novaterm
unable to find device

If I'm right, novacom must work perfectly to use "webos quick install", so I need help to install any ipk software.

Thanks in advance.

Probably not the solution you're looking for, but...

IF you could get Preware running on your Pre, you could install everything else over the air.

But of course you need novacomd to do that. The advantage here is that you only need it ONCE. Ask a friend that runs windows or MacOS to install novacom or do it at a public library/internet cafe/etc. Use that system to install Preware, and you're good to go.

Did you enter Developer mode on the Pre? Just type "webos20090606" into Universal Search.

You can also install ipk's with the SDK. Just drag and drop the ipk on palm-install.bat

looks right. As another poster said, be sure the phone is in developer mode. Once you have preware there's an app you can install so that you don't have to always use the konami code.

Default novacom can't find the device.

I do have novacom installed but it seems that novacom can't find the palm device. It shows:

linux-umtd:/opt/Palm/novacom # ./novaterm
unable to find device

I have a doubt about the "switch" yes or no. When I run the Developer mode application, it shows a button to select yes or no, but, when does it mean yes and when no?. When the word no is visible and the switch hides yes, it means developer mode or on the contrary.

In some thread I heard about the possibility of having a broken cable, but I can read and write files from/to the palm, so I think this is not my case.

I don't have any idea about what is happening, may be the next web os update could fix this.

Thanks again.

You don't have to doubt about the switch if you type in the command someone else listed earlier in the thread...

For many people who don't speak English as their first language, the word doubt means question. He doesn't 'doubt' as Americans understand it, he has a question about how it works. I learned this when I began working with people in other countries at work who would email me with questions.

To answer the question about the Developer Mode app -- when you see the word 'ON' and the switch changes from gray to blue, developer mode is turned on. When you switch it either way, you will have to restart your phone.

May be this means something wrong with my PalmPre or with novacomd?

Many thanks.

Attaching myself to this thread since I have exactly the same issue as posting #9. Would be really great to get an answer as to why this happens.

I am running Mandriva 2010.0 i586 and converted the official novacom deb file to rpm with alien:
alien --to-rpm palm-novacom_1.0.46_i386.deb
rpm -Uhv palm-novacom-1.0.46-2.i386.rpm

Everything seems OK, I can enable the dev mode nicely and choose Just Charge, but novacom is unable to connect. Opening port 6968 in the firewall for both tcp and udp doesn't help, either.

I've heard about the possibility that Palm pré in Europe has limited its functions. żcould this mean that I can't use my Palm Pré in developer mode from Spain?
