Open your Messaging app
Tap the Messaging button (top left of screen)
Tap Preferences and Accounts
Inside the NEW MESSAGES box, tap SYSTEM ALERT
Tap Ringtone
Pick your desired ringtone
Close out the app

Done.

I believe you only get to chose one custom tone which covers all incoming messages

There is a HomeBrew patch that allows you to customize it per user as well.

Is that per user or per contact? The user would normally be considered to be the person who uses the phone.

My bad, I meant per contact. Since you caught me making a mistake, I'll double back what I charged
