When I sometimes use an application or applications the unit will warm up so that it feels hot to the touch. Is this normal?

Yeah, the heat-up is pretty bad, my fellow iphone using co-workers call my phone "the toaster!"

well make sure you keep the phone charged up as full as possible for the first three to four weeks at all times . This is seasoning the battery. The phone will heat up when using certain apps like trapster or sprint nav. And even google sometimes . And until the gpu is integrated it will do this.

The phone should get warm but not very hot. My phone doesn't heat up to the point where I'd call it hot.

On the plus side, winter is coming on. At least your hands will stay warm.
