How does this phone not have a voice recorder or at least an app which will give it the functionality? Why can't we get a patch or homebrew? Is there some hardware holding it back?

    really, there is? which?

the hardware is not the problem, there is just no official interface to the microphone.

if Im not wrong, there is no homebrew for that.. and I would like an application like RecorderX on the PalmOS...

No microphone support in the SDK. When that changes you will see voice recorders, voice dialing, etc.

I also want this. It would be nice if Palm included a voice recorder in the update (the iPhone's is really nice), but I'd pay for related apps, e.g., a good instrument tuner.

Are you sure? the HomeBrew people have workout out a video app that also records sounds, therefore a memo recording app can't be that far off?

The SDK was changed in 1.3.1 which allowed the video app, or so I've read ?
    Thought of the day :
No sense being pessimistic, it probably wouldn't work anyway

    yes, it's Precorder.

Just a very few of the threads that pop us when you do a search for "voice record" that deal with this. Plus its part of many "feature wish list," "complaints" and "what I miss" treads. Easy to find those when search by post. All have same answer to your question.

-Palm didn't do it, don't know why, aren't they idiots, how stupid...
-3rd Party WebOS apps can't do it yet easy because don't have full access to mic.
-Several apps like SoundRec can do it though classic. Why can apps get access to mic via classic but not WebOS? Nobody sure, but shows it CAN be done.
-Precorder did it as part of video recording

    Seriously dumb thing.
I know someone with three lines switched to SPRINT from ATT.
He bought Samsung Moment instead of Pre.
Voice recorder is most important to him than browsing and such.

The Precorder app accesses modified pipelines in the OS. Basically, it involves more than your usual app. WebOS 1.3.1 setup some internal codecs to set the playing field for WebOS-Internals to be able to provide this functionality.

Once Precorder becomes more stable and provides more functionality, there will most likely be an audio recording app/service. Don't worry, I've been rallying for it since the Precorder app was developed.
