If you see root@palm-webos-device:/ you are rooted, congratulations sir.

I got the same message, but if it is rooted I cannot get "putty" to work. It says "fatal error connection timed out". any advice? thanks guys

You are rooted, but it's not using the same port that PuTTY is expecting.

I recommend you use the older WebOS Internals setup. Supposedly PreWare can install the packages, but I haven't had much luck.

After you have the root screen (which you do in the information shown above), type the following lines at your root@palm-webos-device:/# prompt.

    Code:
    cd /tmp
    wget http://gitorious.org/webos-internals/bootstrap/blobs/raw/master/optware-bootstrap-manual.sh
    chmod 755 ./optware-bootstrap-manual.sh
    sh ./optware-bootstrap-manual.sh
This will set up the services you need (including SSH) with the proper firewall entries.
