My device was working perfectly until webOS 1.3.1, now when I hit power button to turn off display, the device continuously attempts to light display. I had screen set to turn off after 30 seconds, 1 minute, and then two minutes and secure unlock set to off, and then a simple pin. Still the same problem. This really sucks because it is going to seriously strain and drain my battery. Guess no body else has seen this issue. Cannot find any reports of it anywhere else. Does anyone catch an error like me ?

I've had that happen once or twice to my Pre. A reset has always fixed the problem. I typically only saw it after re-enabling the "no ding on charge" patch (sorry, I can't remember the actual name) when I've had to WebOS Doctor it.

Yes I do! I was running 1.2.1 on a CDMA Pre with a bunch of patches when the 1.3.1 update came up. Removed all the patches as advised (Preware, WOQI, WORU, EPR and even "manually"), then updated to 1.3.1 yesternight. Everything seemed to be fine then.

I just noticed an unusual battery drop this morning, then the screen wake-up/shut "dance" this morning. Not a single patch installed, though!

Will share more ... as soon as I have more on this. But you're not alone anymore!

I had similar strange display behaviour (1.1.3) when the Pre thought the headset was still plugged in (while it wasn't). I plugged it in and plugged it out again and the Pre turned normal again.

file coaster doesn't complete just hangs with wait spinnr, amazon Mp3 hangs and lags
    all after 1.3.1

Tweaking the earphone did not change the issue. Besides, the issue appeared right after the 1.3.1 update while I had not used the earphone plug before.

I did a few more checks and found a pattern: after I turn the screen off with the power button, it will stay off for 15 seconds, then light on for 5 seconds, then light off for 15 seconds, and so on... repeatably. Powering down the device does no better.

Much much too regular to be a coincidence. Maybe the log messages will help understand what is going on.

I may have found something in the /var/log/messages file: every 20 seconds, the phone tries to connect to the CDMA network. Because I live in GSM-land (France), there is no CDMA network to be found (makes the Pre a great PDA, though!). Of course, my "phone" is not provisioned, as reported by the system in the log messages:

This was not an issue in 1.2.1, and should not be an issue in 1.3.1 either, as I always activate Airplane Mode so to de-activate the phone. Seems this is not happening!

@tobyagony: do you live in GSM-land too?

We may have to ask Rod Whitby about this, as he indeed lives in ... another GSM-land (Australia). Hey, Rod, any advice / brilliant idea on this?

In the meantime, I'll give the Phone Toggle / Data Toggle patchs a try, who knows...

    mount -o remount,rw /
    chmod -x UpdateDaemon

You need root the phone to paste/run those commands.

You can find the instructions from webos-internals.

Or you can download Terminal from Preware.

Thanks for the auto-update disable fix, works like a charm. So we got it in the end, great teamwork!

I guess this one deserves a patch entry in Preware. I'll take care as soon as I can ... unless you're faster!

Since the auto-update disable fix does the trick for you too, it sounds like UpdateDaemon was the cause of the issue. But contrary to me, your Pre has been activated and should not exhibit this issue. Amazing...

It would be interesting to understand why, but this requires access to (some part of) the /var/log/messages file. Can you provide it?
