gdial definitely lets you hear the voice mails played back. you can't do it from the log in screen (that looks like the GV webpage), but you can do it from another screen. it's pretty sweet.

question: where is the option to set how long GV rings for?

alright for anyone who is wondering there is an option under mobile number (you hit edit, which makes more options appear, then hid show advanced options and scroll all the way to the bottom) which lets you send a call directly to voice mail if it does not get through.

so, if you are mostly using GV as a more accessible form of voicemail, after friends try calling your sprint phone and it rings however many times is normal, it will automatically get kicked to the GV 'leave your info' prompt.

EDIT: Ignore me. Stihl answered the question beautifully.

I have a couple things I'm curious about. I guess I don't quite understand all the bells and whistles when it comes to Google Voice.

Okay, so I did a test after I set up my messages to be forwarded to GVoice.

***By the way, I'm using GDial Pro. Is this the best app to use for the Pre?

Okay, so anyways, I did a test. I called my phone number from my girlfriend's Pre. It rang and the voicemail picked up. I left some quick message so I could see if everything was working.

Well, it did indeed forward to my GVoice account. NOW! when I go into GDial Pro and click on the history button on the bottom of the app. The one in the middle it brings up a list of missed calls/etc. Basically a list of the history.

Okay, so I click on the voicemail that was left and it takes me to a different page. It takes me to a page where I can see the contact who called (my girlfriend), shows me the transcription and theres a button that says listen...

My QUESTION IS, the little phone icon with a plus sign...? What is that? When I click on it it says WEB DIAL SUCCESS and moments later I get a call from my google number. If I answer the incoming call, which is from my google voice number it starts ringing.... it's calling someone when I pick it up. Person it was calling is my girlfriend...

So yeah, that is one big ball of confusion. I'd love it if someone could help me out and explain what is going on. Obviously it's going through the steps to call back the person that called/left me a voicemail. But why is it calling me for me to pick up and it's ringing someone else, etc.?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I have the same question as Rawandvital. I also hit that button with the plus mark, then got calls from my own GV number, and then my wife's phone rang and she got a voice mail (presumably from me or my GV). What the heck is that button for?

    /Kevin

    @Rawandvital and Commonplace

It's because Google Voice is not a VOIP provider it's more of a middle man type service with regards to outgoing calls.

When you clicked that phone icon you told it you wanted to call your wife/girlfriends number. So Google calls your phone and then once it's connected to you it then dials your wifes/girlfriends number.

In short - it calls you - then calls your contact then connects the two of you.

For incoming calls - some one calls your google voice number google then basically forwards the call to your cell phone.

Programs like gDial Pro - while very nice - are not even needed to use Google Voice.

    Thanks Kenny!

Here's my next question. I set up my call forwarding and everything without a problem.

My girlfriend on the other hand is having major problems...

We set up google voice for her. We got her GDial Pro. Set that all up. Lastly we dialed *28 and typed in her google voice number so all her voicemails will be forwarded.

So I tried to test it out for her. I called her normal phone number. Let it ring and ring until the voice mail picks up. I don't get her voicemail though, I get some guy saying... " We are unable to complete your call at this time, please try again later.... then something in spanish.... then the guy says again, message 12........124"

Anyone have any clue. Is it just processing. Is it being overloaded? Why isn't her original voice mail message picking up.?
  9. #149
Maybe you typed in the wrong forwarding number. You might do the *28 plus the number again.
    Palm V-->Visor Deluxe-->Visor Prism-->Visorphone-->Treo 180-->Treo 600-->Treo 650 on Sprint-->Treo 700p-->Centro-->Diamond-->Pre-->HTC EVO 4g???!
  10. #150
Yeah, I triple checked that. We even Dialed *38 to deactivate the voice mail forwarding and dialed *28 to redo it. No luck...

When it's deactivated and I call my girlfriend's phone, it goes to voicemail perfectly fine. When I call her Gvoice number it also goes to the message she recorded for that.

But, when we type *28 and then her google voice number it has problems.

I'm starting to wonder...hmmm. She never recorded a personal voicemail message on her palm pre. It's the standard stock message that sprint has on the device. Could this have a hand in what's causing problems?!?

When I try I get a message saying "the message code you entered is not valid." I tried various entries each with no luck and I'm have sprint (I.e. *28 + 1 and my number, *28 and my number, just calling *28 hoping for a prompt.) Any ideas?

Is anybody getting a really crackly connection with their google voice number?

Also, I have the option clicked for going straight to my voicemail if the call forwards, but calling from my work phone (which is masked to just be "516" on caller ID) it calls my phone instead of going to voicemail after its been FWDed... is that because its not a recognized number?

It does work with a standard number - goes straight to voicemail... so that is probably the issue. I wonder if Google will fix that, cuz its a pretty stupid feature. IMHO

I just tried to set this up this morning. I called my cell from work and my phone rang. I ignored the call and the GV call screening picked up asking for the caller's name. I gave it and it called my cell again! I ignored it a second time and it took about 6-7 rings to get to GV voicemail.

Do I have to turn off GV call screening for it to go directly to my GV voicemail?

you have to go under the advanced setting under your mobile account and change it to go straight to voicemail under the forwarding option.
but apparently if its a different number then it will do that regardless, as in my post above with the stuff I'm trying to figure out.

I checked that option and call screening still intercepted it. Turning off call screening made it go directly to voicemail so I'll just leave it that way.

I believe that there is a bug with GV. If you get a call to your sprint # from a blocked number (possibly any unknown #?) it does not go straight to your google voicemail, it calls your google voice number. This happens even if you have "go straight to voicemail" on

Works great for me! The Pre is turning out to be an awesome device with the help of some preware patches and google voice!

This could very well be the problem!!

NEVER dial 1 in front of a phone number. Your not outside the states, so there's no point!! Using 1 should only be a failsafe if the 10-digit # doesn't work, which it always should on a cell phone.

*73 + 10-digit GV # will definitely work, BTW.... but callers that receive a busy signal won't actually make it to your GV voicemail.

*73, *74, *28 all give me the same prompt "The message code you entered is not valid.... "

I only added the 1 after nothing else worked, I contacted Sprint Via web chat and after 15 mins, I received the following response:

(edit: adding a 1 doesn't work for those who may be having trouble)

Agent (*****G.): "Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you today. At this time I have exhausted all basic troubleshooting steps. Due to the complexity of the issue you are experiencing I ask that you please contact a Technical Support Specialist at (**********) **********"
    - However I didn't take the number down as I new that Sprint e-mailed you the transcript... Problem is the number was *** out in the transcript.
    - I suppose I'll call the regular tech support later in the week.

*** Edit2: It appears that YouMail has announced that not all of Sprints Network has this short code enabled just yet.
