I hate to sound naive but I recently got my google voice number. I just don't see the point of it. Am I supposed to tell everyone I know to call that GV number now. Doesn't seem to make sense. I guess I'm just looking for some everyday uses for this thing. I have read their overview but I still must be missing something.

I kinda thought the same thing until I read this and then figured I will use mine.

I am kinda hoping that we can port numbers soon.

I don't have a home number and my cell isn't local so I got a local gv #. I also give it out to people I don't want to have my cell and as a way to ring both me and my wife.

Man, I wish I didn't miss these. If anyone's got an extra invite that they don't mind sparing, could you PM me? I've been on the waiting list for a couple months now with no luck. If I got an invite via PM I'd send one back here onto the forums when my official invite comes!

I'm waiting for number portability before I really start using mine (so I can change my current popular number to the gvoice line); but if that's not available by the end of the year, I'm likely to just start using it.

Here's an example of how it could be used (just a few scenarios, of many).

Someone (unknown) calls the number during the work day, M-F 8-5. The caller is prompted to identify him/herself, and does so. My personal cell phone rings, my work cell phone rings, and my work desk phone ring. All at the same time. If I'm in the back working on a server, I answer one of the cell phones, if I'm at my desk, I answer that phone. The phone identifies the caller. I don't want to talk to them right now, so I don't accept the call. The caller leaves a message, which is then translated to text, and sent to my email address (which, btw, I get on my Pre...). I read it, and decide I really should have taken the call, and call them back (the numbers recorded in the records). I enter the number in my contact list, so next time I know exactly who they are.

Next, my wife calls. No need for that to go to my BB, so it just rings on my Pre and at my desk.

After that, someone from work calls, and it goes to my BB and to my desk phone.

6:30 rolls around, and my wife wants to know when I'm going to be home. It goes only to my cell phone this time, since I'm never at work that late.

Right after I tell her I'm almost home, that buttwipe program that keeps trying to sell me extended coverage for my car/home/airconditioning/dog/skateboard calls again. He's called before, and in a "special" address book. GVoice recognizes the number, and the caller gets a message. I used to have a "don't call me anymore" message, but I got smarter, now a very phone-company sounding message, just for him (and other buttwipes like him) says "We're sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service..."

All to the same number. Get the idea?

It took me about a month to get my invite. Finially got it though and works like a charm.

You don't need an invite for google voice. Just go and sign up, they'll send you a link to join in a week or so.
