So my phone fell into water and has been dead since Saturday. It now turns on and everything shows on screen, but the touching is dead. I can plug in my usb cable and it asks what mode I want but I can't select an option. How can I get it to USB mode so I can copy off all my pics and data??

That came up with a big USB symbol on the screen but it still doesn't mount the drive letter. It did come up with some Novacom driver install when that happened though. But not showing as a disk. Any other ideas?

Unless you know how to root,

    you're screwed.

then least you could do is click the "Thanks" button.

If you can't access the touch screen and you haven't rooted your Pre yet then there's no way I know of to make this happen. The trick with holding down the volume Up key while turning the phone on just let's it talk to your computer's USB port, it doesn't actually make it a mountable drive.

You might try some of the tricks that others have mentioned, sitting it in uncooked rice for a day, sitting it on something warm, freezer, etc. Just search for water and you'll get all sorts of hits.

You might try bearing down on the screen a little bit harder. Not enough to break the screen or case mind you but enough to shake/push out any residue left from the soaking it took.

Worst case scenario you can use the volume up trick to get your computer to talk to your Pre and WebOSDoctor it but you'll lose your pictures, music, etc. I don't think that will fix a broken touch sensor though but you might actually get lucky.

My touchscreen stopped working today too. I had the same problem. But eventually I was able to get my pictures off. Here is what I did:

    1. My phone was already in devmode. I can’t remember if you can activate devmode without the touchscreen..?
    2. When I plugged it in with the USB cable, my computer would recognize it, but when I click on the “removable drive (g:)” it would say “Insert disk” or something..
    3. I left it plugged in and looked up how to root it.
    4. I had to download and install a few pieces of software on my computer, and it took a while, but I was able to get the root working based on watching a youtube video (called: How to root your Palm Pre) that shows it step by step.
Note: some of the wiki pages the video mentions have been updated and someone has removed some of the steps, you need to look in the history tab in wiki and click on some of the older articles.
Another note: In order to figure out the IP address of your Pre, you will need access to your wifi router’s settings. Your router will list the active IP addresses and you’ll need to figure out which one is your Pre.
    5. I confirmed that the root worked by logging on to my phone from my computer with putty.
    6. I downloaded and installed WinSCP on my computer and used it to copy the files off the Pre.
Note: You need to keep the Pre active so it doesn’t go to sleep when you are logged onto it and copying things. If you have a pin number lock you need to enter the pin with your keypad so the phone will get passed the “Phone is locked” screen and connect to the wifi. While you are logged on just hit a key on the Pre every now and again to keep it from sleeping.

It took me about 2 hours to do all this..

OK, so I've followed the rooting steps up until I need to get the script to create a username from gitorious.org.

The problem is that the address listed on the wiki is no longer valid. I have no linux experience, but all I want to do is get my pictures off my pre with a broken touch screen.

Does anyone know what to replace the http site with in the wget command line when manually setting up optware? I can't access preware from my phone, so I'm stuck.

if youre running any version of webos from 1.3.1 and on than disregard this thread. its last post was back in november. all you need to do is

    Palm WebOS 1.3.1 Chnagelog

You can access USB Drive mode by pressing and holding the orange key/Option + Sym + U after connecting the phone to the computer. This enables you to access USB drive mode if the screen is broken or stops responding to taps.

    yogibaba and PAKINTO like this.

And if you're not running 1.3.1 or higher yet, use the 1.3.5 webOS Doctor (important, make sure that it's 1.3.1 or higher otherwise the USB partition will be wiped out).

Again, 1.3.1 or higher webOS Doctor leave the /media/internal partition completely intact, which means your files are preserved.

Then, you can use the shortcut to access USB drive mode.

So you're saying webOS Doctor won't do a factory reset? Yes, it is running 1.3.5.

How can I do the (hard) factory reset before I sell it without the Touch screen working?

I can't use the touchscreen so I have no idea how to do this. I spent the last 15 minutes looking for a webos doctor 1.2.1 download and I can't find anything.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have the same issue and I could not find anywhere how to access HD mode so the computer can read it without the touchscreen working.
