I gave up on telstra a long time ago. As I said in the other thread Optus appears to be using the full 3G as all web sites load as fast on my previous 3G enabled phone (of which I have no intention of switching back too)

Its a shame for all those telstra users looking at the pre because from what 'thewhitetower' is seeing your going to be stuck on edge unless you roam.

hey guys

all other aussie gsm umts operate at 900/2100. Telstra nextg operates at 850, and switches on to hitchinson 2100 when needed. also, doesn't telstra support EDGE?

So optus, virgin etc would be fine on 900 - although i understand the german will only have settings for telstra.

so i'm guessing the eventual american gsm won't do for us aussies (apart from nextg), as it's 850/1900? any optus network users would want a euro pre.

So let me see if we've got this straight...in Australia we need different Pre's depending on what network we want to use??!

Telstra = Future American Pre
All other networks = German/European Pre

What we really need is a Pre that just works anywhere!

Interesting though. I've shot through an email to their sales team regarding how long they anticipate it will be before this is actually available. Have also asked them about warranty policy and whether they ship to Australia.

Does anyone know if GSM Pre is available for sale without contract in O2 at the UK?

+1

I still don't understand why they did that. If they went the Treo Pro way (850/1900/2100) it would work beautifully everywhere. 900 isn't used anywhere anyways so I don't know why did they bother.

Basically, it's just telstra that's the odd one out because they have their own special 3g (nextg). personally i never go near telstra, i stick to virgin/optus.

what we really need is for phones to be quad-band umts

So, do pres *other* than the german pre work on every network? is there a list anywhere of the international operators listed in the O2 uk and movistar pres? since we can't enter apn.

i mean, if i get an unlocked spanish or english pre, will it give me 3g on the optus network? (900/2100)

any thoughts on this deal?
