Holy Crap! Look, Amazon's embracing the cloud, too. No coincidence, I'm sure:

    Amazon Web Services

amazon s3 service is a storage service -- it's probably Palm's profile backup + app catalog + updates
French Pre3, UK Pre2, US Veer, German gsm Pre, 680, garmin ique 3600 & still have my working palm pilot 1000 with the 1 Mb adapter

Please remove UberCalendar and google sync behavior patches prior to system updates.
patch Google calendar sync behavior for 2.x.x and TouchPad (Oauth2 and advanced sync requirements enabled)

That would be my guess as well. Amazon is really THE player in the cloud computing market, much to the chagrin of Microsoft and IBM.

Crystal ball says that Palm is using Amazon as their data and cloud platform. I can guarantee you that (because of cost and scope constraints) Palm isn't rolling their own solution!

That said, welcome to the future of smart devices. From now on, someone - probably multiple someones - will be tracking everything you do on your device. Good news is we're still decades away from the government being able to do this with any degree of competence.

Number one reason why people should actually support big government. :-)

These two files say what when and where data is backed up from the Pre.
    /var/luna/data/Apps/br/config/application.properties
    /var/luna/data/Apps/br/config/BRSyncSource.properties

They say the Palm Profile stuff is backed up to Funambol Open Source Mobile Cloud Sync and Push Email

Wow, never thought I would see government and competence in the same sentence. But seriously, if Palm is so invested in them then Amazon should really come up with a media center to rival the other fruity guys.
FYI: My Pre is as plain vanilla as the day it came out of the box...

    good catch...

maybe that's the contacts, calendar - palm profile/pim stuff. Amazon must be the app catalog + updates??

    check out the press announcement:
"User adoption of the company's software is also exploding. Funambol software was part of a highly anticipated major new handset introduced in June."

Funambol is a software vendor; Amazon provides cloud services. Amazon's EC2 cloud compute service is (ideally) an infinitely, invisibly scalable virtual machine; like any machine, it requires software to operate.

So, looks like Palm is running Funambol on EC2.
