No more four-digit code to get into our Pre. Instead, how cool would it be if we have an App that lets us store our thumb print and place our thumb on the screen as our security!

What would it take to create something like that?

If the camera had a macro mode/lens, it might be possible to capture enough ridge detail to pick out minutiae patterns... but it would still be cumbersome at best.

    ...a touch screen isn't a scanner.

Nor is a normal screen. heheh... this thread reminds me of back when I was doing tech support for a fast food chain. It is amazing how many calls we got from managers attempting to send their paperwork to the home office by pressing the pages against their monitor.

Sorry for going off topic... just thought I'd share a laugh.

i had to stop using that technology on my laptop because it would fail to recognize my print. I'd hate to see that on a phone!

Really? How often would it fail?

I know that the screen isn't a scanner, but all you would need is a program that analyzes the thumb print like what forensic labs use. Correct me not.

Hmmmm, you know what else might be cool? Having a retinal scanner. What would it take to get the touchscreen to do that?

Could a program be written for the pre that's designed to 'decode' fingerprints "like what forensic labs use?" Sure!

The problem is that there's no way for the Pre to get your thumbprint into the program. (Because once again, the screen isn't a scanner)

There once was an old program like that for the Palm VII I think....

You places your thumb on the screen, and it scanned it.

Except it was fake, and if you held the directional button down while scanning it would 'pass' you. Twas fun screwing with friends with that app.

But seriously, no it's not possible.

Software would not do this. The phone simply does NOT have the hardware to do it. The screen will not read your fingerprints.

The so called "fingerprint security devices" you do see for other phones such as the iphone have you make a secret gesture on the screen to unlock it. It does not in any way scan your fingerprint. It will never be possible unless a dedicated piece of hardware is built into the phone.

Yeah. All we'd have to do is use the current (homebrew) flashlight app, hold it up to our eye, press the button, then get an app that would read the result.

I'm going to try that now...

ok, i trid that, but nw i cant see my pre,or my keboard...

You need to hold it there for 25 minutes before it works.
