It is based on WebKit, which is the same as Safari and Chrome. It doesn't need a name though.

The problem is that palm is using an old version of webkit, but hopefully once they work out all the major issues with the device they will update webkit to a more recent version. This will improve compatibility, speed of browsing and speed of WebOS as a whole.

I'm no expert on this, but almost every review of the Pre that I've seen commented on how great it's browser is ... second only to the iPhone and very close to that. I have to say I'm generally impressed with the browser (for a phone), and it absolutely kills in comparison to the few others I've tried.

I'd be curious to see a few examples of pages that don't work for you (other than Flash stuff which is a known limitation, and I don't think works on any mobile browser yet). What other mobile browser do you like better?

ive previously had a touch pro that is windows mobile based. i had multiple browsers on it. it had opera, opera mobile, opera mini , IE(didnt touch it, bc its trash, and something that is comparable to a safari .. it starts with an S and is better for larger sites.

I know that this browser does not compare to opera or opera mobile. i wish it did. it does not work on many sites. try bodog , Online Poker, Casino, Sports Betting and Horse Racing at Bodog[/url], another site that you cant really try without a login.. i did a simple google search for marshalls and then i clicked to go to the marshalls site and it didnt work. its frustrating bc/ i have so much hope and potential for this phone. i was doing whatever i could to stay from going to blackberry, but unfortunately i think blackberry is the leader bc/ its the best and i might have to go that wa. im going to give this phone 1 month and if its not improved ill go to the to the blackberry tour.

Lets hope that doesnt have to happen bc/ i think and believe the WEB os idea is by far the best idea for phone OS bc/ it doesnt require as much energy and as much computing power as the other phones. For example my htc touch pro that i got rid of is something like 800 mhz or something ridiculous... maybe be less slightly. but it also has 512 mb of ram.. thats alot and it didnt perform good enough.

    1. No, don't upgrade now because Palm will release the official update soon.
    2. Yes, 1.2 is going to be faster.
    3. No, not because of updates to webkit, it is still using the same old version.

Coming from using the Blackberry browser on a daily basis, WebOS browser is a godsend. I cannot even begin to describe how much of a joy it is to use after what I've been dealing with for a few years.

The default browser on almost every phone is lacking. some are better than others of course. HOwever, i believe there are other options for many of hte other Phones that have different OS's . for instance the blackberry browser may not have been that great , but it has the option to upgrade to opera or opera mobile or opera mini and have lots of variation. so NO doubt that the web os browser is an exceptional out of hte box browser, however it is not comparing to the apps that you can dload free of charge like the operas.

Opera on the Blackberry sucked too. The only remotely decent third party was BOLT and even that had issues.

I have owned just about every smartphone OS (except iPhone, which isn't a smartphone), and the Pre's web browser blows them all out the park, hands down. That includes Skyfire, Opera, that beta browser winmo has etc.

There are smartphones that have flash, any WinMo device with the new IE. Treo Pro has it. I was using that for awhile before I gave it to my fiance, and grabbed a Pre. Darn thing drove me nuts. The browser was SO slow it was unbelievable, huge resource hog etc. and the flash didn't work horribly well. When it did work, the browser wasn't usually capable of formatting itself to show the whole darn flash piece or video anyway.

No thanks, I'll take the Pre's browser as is. If palm tosses in flash and a new webkit, it would be a dream, but for now, my CELL PHONE browser is almost as good as my computer with the exception of certain limitations.

If you really think Opera blows away the Pre's browser (or any other phone with webkit for that matter, like the iPhone) than this isn't the phone for you, period. Stick with WinMo.

I don't think. I know its better. I hate windows mobile. I wish the pre browser was better. But its not. Plaon and simple . I also know the iphone browser is better as well. Howerver I hope thay changes bc I am a supporter of the potrntial abilitu of the pre os.

Don't be so defendive.fact is fact.

I used to use Opera mini on my 755p. When it wasn't crashing, it was pretty nice. I especially appreciated the ability to reflow text into a column that fit on the screen. The Pre doesn't do that. Instead it is attempting to format websites as nearly as possible like they would appear on a desktop. And it does that very well. Full websites look way better on the pre than on Opera mini.

It's a different pholosophy, but it works. I have yet to encounter a website that doesn't work on the Pre. Perhaps the op doesn't know how to zoom?

By the way, the Marshall's website doesn't work because it's flash. Opera mini won't do that either.
