    Look,

If you're okay with having ads on your phone, thats fine. If your fine with having ads being used on everything, good for you. Personally, I didn't pay for this phone to spam ads at me while using GPS, etc.

If you're okay with this, then please, by all means, when you buy a new watch, please don't freak out if they put a sticker in the bezel w/ a Wendy's Ad. We all know you bought a Watch so it could have ad's placed on it correct?

Just like I purchased a phone so it could have ads on it, right? I didn't purchase a google service, or a facebook service, etc. They are free software that makes money off of ad's, its a cooperative aspect in that sense. You get free services for putting up w/ ad's and viewing ads.

I remember when Verizon, a year or two ago, was going to put ad's on its phone's and give them away. Thats fine, if you knowingly agree to this. It'd be a great idea. I didn't drop $200 for one phone and $579 for another to have ad's on them. Period.

Look I don't like this at all but lets put things in perspective.

All of your information is for sale. I don't give a **** how careful you are cookies are on your computer and they track where you go, what you click and what you like to look at.

Every time you use your cell phone or EZ pass or credit card or whatever your location, spending habits / everything are recorded by some DB somewhere and its only natural that companies will pay for / sell that information.

Personally I don't like it but I also run my businesses and life in a way that I don't do anything I don't want on the front page of the news paper in the morning.

No one cares that you might like midget porn, buy nike shoes, go to a massage parlor and leave an extra $75 tip for whatever reason, but in the end that data has its uses. Thus someone is willing to pay for it.

I can rattle of two dozen things as to why I'm pissed off at Palm or the Pre, this honestly isn't one of them. Palm has bigger issues of just surviving the next year or two, honestly I wouldn't get worked up over this. Also if you use any google product they are doing the same damn thing to you.

I use them, and don't care and fully expect this. Its partly why we don't have to pay for email services, news services etc and frankly I like that much more than I hate this.

Because god knows ads are just overwhelming on the pre right now. Oh wait there are none, except ones put on by app developers giving out free apps.

And the gps app doesn't even have any ads. In fact, the GPS app isn't even a Palm app, it's a Telenav app (not even sprint specific) so you have yet to give an argument that holds any weight, and instead are acting like an ***** fanatic.

Again, learn to have thoughts of your own instead of mimicing what others on the internet say.

Some of you amaze me.. Your content with Palm being able to "Put advertisements" on YOUR phone. Its like they can do no wrong. If the phone caused 90% of the users to have cancer, you would defend Palm... Some of you look like complete fools.
Actually, the OP of the old thread from back then did post the link to the patent being filed, and if you read the patent, it's actually an extension of a patent filed like 10 (?) years ago.

OMFG. You most definitely paranoid! Turn off the background data collection on your pre in "location services" that should shut you up.

I don't believe this necessarily indicates that there will be ads on the phone, but in the more likely case that they will be in 3rd party ad-ware apps, I personally would much rather a more personal advertisement venture than one that starts telling me about how Ethel em's is opening a cafe in New York when I live in Utah, not that I'd really want Morman-based ads, but at least they'd be reasonably relevant.

I mean, even my damn DVR by comcast advertises left and right, but I mean if it would at least notice I can't stand Reality shows maybe It might suggest something worth watch.

Anyway, my point is location based advertising isn't going to affect us, not for another decade or so, and there's no way Palm is going to advertise on their own phone, it'll be suicide. No, if this were to be used it would be for apps which need funding but would rather provide it free with a couple ads for those who don't want to shell out money for it.

Exactly!!! I swear this place is slowly turning into drama queen central.
    Sony Clie --> Tungsten t2 --> iPhone3g --> Palm Pre --> Droid

This was discussed twi weeks ago on the lasy precentral podcast its not s big deal. If I can get a great program for free just for some ads in the corner then this is great. This is the next big thing in free apps.

Sssshhhhh, don't tell anyone what they really did. See, some of those really stupid companies would have just done this without telling anyone, without having users agree to it, and without filing any sort of patent.

Not Palm, they're brilliant. They tell everyone what they're going to do, but instead of doing what they say (which will make money for them), they've planned on lying all along, and using the information to secretly spy on us. That's because they know the Pre is doing so well, they can afford to risk pissing off customers in order to do something thatmakes them no money, but gives them purile pleasure.

Now, they know where I was yesterday at 15:30. Sitting in my cubicle at the government facility where I work. They also know I was there at 15:31, 15:32, 15:33, 15:34 (I tricked them at 15:35, I got up to take a break, and left my phone on my desk!!!), 15:36 I was still fooling them, 15:37 then too...

Amazing the things that folks get upset about.

OK dude, midget porn and $75 tips for "whatever" at massage parlors is one thing, but that buying nike shoes thing is disgusting, and has no place on a public forum!!

Ok, I think the crossing the bridge when we come to it argument is totally apt... think about it this way, Palm is struggling and needs to find a way to stay afloat. If that means they give away a free ad-supported phone in order to stay afloat and continue to create new devices, or if it just means a few apps may have ads in them, either you bought a pre like it is right now. Palm can't force anything down your throat... so relax.

And seriously, if you put it in perspective, maybe your horrible nightmares where Palm is hiding under your bed will stop.
