    Is it possible to track, in real time, the Pre on the internet when it's lost or stolen? Mobile Me can track the iphone. Is there a pre or homebrew program that is similar?

    there is, webos-internals has instructions on setting up a cron to watch for a code in a text message and then send the gps coordinates to a specified email.
    Mine I have set up with lighttpd web server and a .php file that will post a google map of the coordinates to a webpage on the phone that can be accessed from any browser. Set-up of lighttpd is also on webos-internals. The is a forum thread somewhere on here about it also I think.

    Haha I set up the same exact thing, but I added a battery status field also.

    As mentioned above, the thread on how to set up webserver/lightpd to show phone's location on an embedded map. http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pr...ml#post1840654. This actually works pretty well, very nice all around. There are some additions later in the thread, like how to get accuracy and other info that the phone's GPS will give you to display on the webpage as well.

    Also, you'll need DDNS for the webserver to work anyway, but having the DDNS allows you to do any number of other things if your pre goes missing. Drop in a background-switcher, change out the ringtone sound files, that kind of stuff. Although the silent tracking webpage is certainly my favorite, it certainly gives you some options with the DDNS access.

    You mean you got the php page to display the battery percentage? I asked this in the other thread, but can you copy/paste your php file so I can see how you got the battery to show in the page? I know I'm close, but little syntax errors kill me. In this thread or the other one would be fine with me. I know it's based on the code I gave in the other thread, I just can't get the php to display the number.

    my biggest issue is since I had to put it on an alternate port than 80, I cannot access it from work... or my web server at home for that matter....

    EDIT: that is unless I use a proxy server, but I hate doing that.

    Code:
    <?php
    $gps=`luna-send -n 1 palm://com.palm.location/getCurrentPosition {accuracy:1} 2>&1 | cut -d, -f4,5 | sed -r 's/[^-\.0-9,]//g'`;
    $bat=`grep BATTERY: /var/log/messages | tail -1 | awk '{print $8}' | sed 's/%,//'`;
    ?>

    <html>
    <title>Location of my Palm Pre</title>
    <iframe width="600" height="500" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&q=<?php echo $gps ?>&z=16&ll=<?php echo $gps ?>&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&q=<?php echo $gps ?>&z=16&ll=<?php echo $gps ?>&source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>
    <p>Battery Status: <?php echo $bat ?></p>
    </html>
    I tried to implement heading, accuracy, and altitude into the web page, but I couldn't get it to work.

    Thanks, that copy/paste fixed my battery issue, still can't figure out what I was mistyping. And here's a fix for you!

    Code:
    <?php
    $gps = `luna-send -n 1 palm://com.palm.location/getCurrentPosition {accuracy:1} 2>&1 | cut -d, -f4,5,6,7,8,9,10 | sed -r 's/[^-\.0-9,]//g'`;

    list($lat, $lon, $acc, $head, $vel, $alt, $vertacc) = explode(",", $gps);

    $bat=`grep BATTERY: /var/log/messages | tail -1 | awk '{print $8}' | sed 's/%,//'`;

    ?>
    <html>
    <title>Location of My Palm Pre</title>
    <iframe width="600" height="500" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&q=<?php echo $lat ?>,<?php echo $lon ?>&z=16&ll=<?php echo $lat ?>,<?php echo $lon ?>&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small>
    <a href="http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&q=<?php echo $lat ?>,<?php echo $lon ?>&z=16&ll=<?php echo $lat ?>,<?php echo $lon ?>&source=embed" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>
    Accuracy:<?php echo $acc ?>,
    Battery:<?php echo $bat ?>
    </html>
    And voila! You have all the other GPS values the phone will give you, assigned to their respective variables. Do with them as you wish, you can see I just like the accuracy and battery % to be displayed.

    This is great. The GPS tracker mod on the wiki tended to slow my phone down. I like that I can just login via the web and see where my phone is. I notice it has a
    Code:
     Battery:<?php echo $bat ?>
    that reference the bat code
    but not one for accuracy or am I missing something.
  11. #11
    Code:
    Accuracy:<?php echo $acc ?>,
    Battery:<?php echo $bat ?>
    All the variables are assigned in what I quoted, you can call any of them that you like. to be viewed on the webpage.

    I wish... as long if it had a background service like Preware and Internalz. I won't keep an app running 24x7 just for GPS tracking.

    The battery line is now working for me, I have it copied just like this:
    Code:
    $bat=`grep BATTERY: /var/log/messages | tail -1 | awk '{print $8}' | sed 's/%,//'`;
    but it returns empty. Any idea why?

    Seems like something for experienced users...

    What about my shoddy verizon gps?

    my thoughts too
    In a world of droid, Pre does it better.

    Shouldn't we treat this world like the Garden of Eden and avoid the apple at all costs?
  18. #18
    is there a more SIMPLE way to have the same function to locate my Pre ?
