They only have branches in Texas. I don't see why anyone who doesn’t live in Texas would want to be a member.

You'd be surprised how much banking you can do without the need to ever step foot in a USAA branch. I've been a USAA member for 12 years and have never even been to Texas outside of a short business trip to Houston. They're also a great insurance company. In 12 years I have no complaints!

Especially with apps like this. (Note attempt to keep thread on topic)

    Interesting; my dad served in the Army Air Corps in WWII. Need to look into this. Thank you. {Jonathan}

Thanks so much for this. I got the 23% discount and would never have known about it if I hadn't read about it here.

Why do you need to live locally to do business with any bank or insurance company? I've never lived in Tx and have been a member for 25 years. Live in Germany now and my three member daughters live in the Pacific Northwest.

Anyway, this 23% discount is GOLD Jerry!!

    McKathryn,

What Sprint number did you call to get the 23% USAA discount?

I used web chat at www (dot) sprint (dot) com (sorry I can't send the link, I don't have enough posts).

I tried using the chat with sprint but they said I had to call customer service.

A couple of things about USAA. There is different membership criteria to be a 'USAA member' (able to use insurance and investment benefits) and using USAA as your bank. Reasons you might want to use USAA as your bank even though you aren't eligible for their other benefits include: they refund ALL your ATM charges, no matter what ATM you use. They have phenomenal customer service, with this new app you are going to just be able to take a picture of the check with your Pre and it will be deposited in your account - just like the iPhone app. They also have outstanding rates on their credit cards and a respectable cashback program on their debit cards...

Seriously, the best bank out there by a landslide. The insurance is nice too but not that much better than Geico...

Sprint is telling me that this discount is only for employees. Not just members

    Correction:
Just finished the web chat session with Sprint CS, and they are going to put the discount request though. We'll see. I'd love to save some more money on my bill

This is great news! I've been using USAA for insurance for years, but always resisted the banking because the check deposit issue (you had to mail them in). WIth this, I will definitely be switching to USAA banking - I'm tired of getting hosed by Wachovia (Wells Fargo to-be). Thanks for the heads up about the discount. I'm getting 20% thru my employer anyway, but the other 3% won't hurt!

Weird...I have had a USAA discouunt for a while. But it isn't close to 23%...more like 5%.

    On their chat system now...

    We'll see.

    Edit:

The CSR says the 23% is only for USAA employees. But she is "submitting it for review."

Oh well, I still am getting the 5% discount.

Here is the relevant part of my chat with Sprint about this. I meant to post last weekend but got sick.

07/31/2009 04:06:38PM Matt: "oh. ok. can you tell me if there is a discount for being a usaa member?"
07/31/2009 04:07:12PM Agent (Antoine W): "One moment while I research this for you."
    07/31/2009 04:07:24PM Matt: "thanks"
07/31/2009 04:14:37PM Agent (Antoine W): "Thank you for your patience. Is the USAA the Automobile Association?"
07/31/2009 04:15:05PM Matt: "united services automobile association, yes"
07/31/2009 04:15:24PM Agent (Antoine W): "Yes, there is a discount available for USAA members."
07/31/2009 04:16:00PM Matt: "oh, what do i need to do to set that up? do you need my usaa member number or something?"
07/31/2009 04:16:17PM Agent (Antoine W): "May I have your email address?"
    07/31/2009 04:16:35PM Matt: "exiledsoxfan@xxx.com"
    07/31/2009 04:17:27PM Agent (Antoine W): "Exiledsoxfan? I like that."
    07/31/2009 04:17:42PM Matt: "ha. thanks"
07/31/2009 04:18:24PM Agent (Antoine W): "Is **********-**********-********** the primary line on the account?"
    07/31/2009 04:18:40PM Matt: "i don't think so"
    07/31/2009 04:18:57PM Matt: "i think ********** is"
    07/31/2009 04:19:30PM Agent (Antoine W): "Thank you."
07/31/2009 04:22:02PM Agent (Antoine W): "Thank you for your patience. The USAA discount has been processed. The discount is **********%. (The number here is 23, I'm not sure why is blocked this number out, but you can clearly see it in the email I posted earlier.) It normally takes between **********-********** billing cycle for the discount to take effect. Your case number is *********."

So, you can see that I clearly asked about a member discount, and though it is blocked here, you can see from the email that what they told me was 23%.

Sorry if they messed up and gave me bad info that I passed on. I think I was pretty clear that I was asking about a member discount and not an employee discount.

    Matt,

I think you may have lucked out - was told this was an EMPLOYEE discount.

From the comment thread at USAA.com regarding the mobile app...

    USAA Moderator Comment
We're feverishly working on similar technology for the many other smartphones on the market. We hope to launch those apps by the end of the year, if not sooner. We'll keep you posted on usaa (dot)com.

I hope they get this out SOONER instead of later! I LOVE USAA!!!
